Press release:
JOTUN PAINTS WILL PROTECT 'QUEEN MARY 2'
Historic link with the first 'Queen Mary'
The contract for the supply of exterior paint and coatings for Cunard Line's 'Queen
Mary 2', which will be the world's largest ever passenger vessel, has been awarded to
Jotun France SA, Paris, the French member company of London-based Jotun Paints
(Europe) Ltd, by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire. The Jotun paints and
coatings for the luxurious new liner will be manufactured, at the company's 20-million
litre plant in Flixborough, South Humberside, to BS EN ISO 9002 quality assurance
standards.
It is interesting historically that Henry Clark and Son which, as Jotun - Henry Clark Ltd,
became part of the Jotun Group in 1974, supplied antifoulings - then known as 'bottom
compositions' - for below-waterline protection of the original 'Queen Mary' when she
won the Blue Riband for the Atlantic crossing in 1936.
Advanced antifouling
The bottom of the new 'Queen Mary' will be protected by "Jotamastic 87 Aluminium'
epoxymastic coating followed, below the waterline, by 'Sealercoat Safeguard Universal'
and 'SeaQuantum Plus' tin-free antifouling.
Jotun's 'SeaQuantum' antifoulings are believed to be the world's most advanced tinfree formulations and are based on a safe silyl polymer (widely used in the food
industry) and incorporating environmentally acceptable active ingredients.
'SeaQuantum' products offer up to five years total protection, a performance equal to
that of the most successful tin-containing selfpolishing antifoulings. 'SeaQuantum Plus'
is formulated for speeds above 18 knots.

The performance and environmental acceptability of 'SeaQuantum' has been proven
by successful application to nearly 600 vessels since 1993. It will meet all
requirements of the IMO on the control of harmful antifouling systems.
Mastic protection
'Jotamastic 87 Aluminium' will also be used to protect the topsides, superstructures
and weather decks of the 'Queen Mary 2' but, in these areas, will be overcoated with
'Hardtop HB' polyurethane topcoat. This Jotun product gives an attractive finish with
excellent colour retention.
Jotun pioneered the development of epoxymastic coatings, and is still a leader in the
development of these highly successful protective systems. 'Jotamastic 87', is a
market-leading product with a remarkable record for protective performance; it is in
use throughout the world to ensure long-term protection against corrosion. The coating
has exceptional wetting, penetration and adhesion, together with good resistance to
water, solvents and many chemicals. With a low solvent content and no isocyanate, it
also has much reduced health and environmental impacts compared with most organic
coatings.
'Jotamastic 87' complies with current NORSOK standards, and substantial dry-film
thicknesses can be applied to minimise application time. Due to a higher solids
content, this advantage is maximised in the 'Aluminium' version that will protect the
'Queen Mary 2'.
Luxurious giant
'Queen Mary 2' is being built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire.
The 150,000-ton vessel will be the longest and widest passenger vessel afloat, being
345 m in length, with a beam of 41 m and a height, from keel to funnel top, of 72 m.
She will also be a new benchmark for luxury and comfort. With two guests in each
cabin, she will accommodate 2620 passengers, served by a crew of 1250. 'Queen
Mary 2' will also incorporate many traditional Cunard features such as sweeping
staircases, expansive promenades and a diversity of luxurious restaurants, public
rooms and swimming pools. New to the vessel will be a planetarium, computer centre,
educational facilities, a maritime museum, spa and health centre.

The new Cunard liner will also include the latest innovative technology. Her 157,000
horsepower will be generated by two gas turbines and four diesel engines, while a
four-pod propulsion system will ensure a speed of nearly 30 knots, producing low noise
and vibration levels and maximum manoeuvrability.
In keeping with Cunard tradition dating back to the mid 1800s, the hull of the 'Queen
Mary 2'' will be painted a distinctive dark grey/black above the waterline. For the ship's
single stack, the company will adhere to the historic red with black bands.
The Cunard Line is part of the Carnival Corporation, USA, which is the world's biggest
cruise operator, but the ship will fly the UK's Union Flag and have Southampton as her
home port.
