UCC/UGC/ECCC Proposal for New Academic Plan If this new plan is not listed in the current NAU academic program inventory, then you must first complete the “Proposal to establish a New Degree” form. All Plans with NCATE designation, or plans seeking NCATE designation, must include an NCATE Accreditation Memo of Approval from the NAU NCATE administrator prior to college curricular submission. UCC proposals must include an 8-term plan. UGC proposals must include a program of study. 1. College: 3. Academic Name: 2. Academic Unit: CEFNS Mathematics & Statistics Plan 5. Plan proposal: Minor in Actuarial Science New Plan 4. Emphasis: New Emphasis 6. Justification for the new plan or certificate, including how the need for the plan was determined. Please also address how it is designed to meet local market, professional requirements, employment opportunities, or other needs. The department is aware of a substantial number of students interested in careers in the actuarial profession. With the deletion of our extended major that had an actuarial emphasis several years ago, there is currently no programmatic identification of the appropriate preparation for such a career. This minor program will serve to identify the academic background suggested as a start for career preparation and will serve as encouragement for interested students to strengthen their preparation in the right areas. Currently, without an identifiable program, we find that students may miss essential components which are difficult to accomplish outside an academic setting. 7. Student learning outcomes of the plan. If structured as plan/emphasis, include for both core and emphasis. (Resources, Examples & Tools for Developing Effective Program Student Learning Outcomes). Not required for a minor program. 8. Academic Catalog text and requirements: 8a. Text to be displayed on the Career tab in the academic catalog (max 3 paragraphs): What Can I Do With A Minor In Actuarial Science? Effective Fall 2012 Actuary is consistently rated as one of the top professions, based on job satisfaction, pay, and other features. Actuaries typically enjoy challenges and problem solving. The work of an actuary involves the quantitative analysis of risk, and managing risk by analyzing the likelihood of future events, especially undesirable events, finding ways to reduce the likelihood of those events, and reducing the effects of undesirable events. Typical employers include companies in the insurance industry. Note: If you want to minor in Actuarial Science, you must consult with one of the Mathematics and Statistics faculty members in addition to being admitted to the university. 8b.
