Being A DIT – The Basics
This is a two-day course aimed at onset experienced camera technicians and data wranglers who want to
reinforce and expand their knowledge. It is an introductory course for those who are being asked to perform
the duties of a DIT on set and will cover the role of the DIT, hands-on experience with numerous cameras
including the RED Epic and ARRI Alexa. It will also cover different types of workflow, data management and
processing, basic colour correcting and dailies creation. Each course, however, will be structured to deal
specifically with the needs of those who attend. Maximum number: 4
Understanding 3D
Introduction to the rigs & their operation: 6 camera department personnel only
2 x 1 day courses
35mm Camera Workshop
The whole process of shooting on 35mm – from loading, to focus pulling: 12 people
1 x 15-day course
Steadicam Operators Workshop
A 5-day course specifically for camera operators and those moving towards working within the Steadicam
arena.
One-Day Workshop Courses
For up to 10 people – The Red Camera; The raft of Sony cameras; The Arri Alexa; Codex
Guild Camera Trainee Course
This 6-day intensely practical course is specifically for those selected for the final part in the selection of the
new intake of GBCT Camera Trainees.
Equipment Fundamentals and Care
One-Day – Aimed at trainees and those who have little or no knowledge of film cameras. Provides an
overview of basic film camera equipment and how to handle it; a semi-practical workshop taught by a focus
puller.
Fundamentals of Film
One-Day – Aimed at trainees and 2nd ACs with no film background. Gives an overview of the fundamental
characteristics of film acquisition, formats, handling, processing and record-keeping. Semi-practical
workshop taught by a focus puller.
Video Signals and Equipment
Aimed at trainees, 2nd AC’s and 1st ACs with a little experience of HD. Gives an overview of different types
of video signal, where they are used, what their strengths and weaknesses are and what equipment is
necessary for proper monitoring. Semi-practical workshop taught by an engineer.
Power, Batteries and Management
Aimed at trainees and 2nd ACs. Gives an understanding of basic electrical theory, power supplied for cameras
and accessories, types of battery, charging, safety and management. Semi-practical workshop taught by a
camera engineer.
The Role of the 2nd AC
Aimed at trainees and video assistants. Gives an understanding of what the role of the 2nd AC entails, with
practical examples for record-keeping and slating and also addressing the relationship with digital cameras.
Seminar taught by experienced focus pullers and loaders.
Optics and Lenses for ACs
Aimed at 2nd ACs and less experienced 1st ACs. Gives an overview of basic optical theory including format
size, field of view and depth of field, and to introduce the different types of lens and optical instrument and
discuss their strengths and weaknesses, as well as routine care and maintenance. Semi-practical workshop
taught by an experienced focus puller.
Media Management and Workflows
Aimed at trainees, 2nd ACs and 1st ACs. Gives an understanding of the on-set management of digital media
and associates on and off-set workflows. Discusses file types, storage types, management procedures,
equipment and personnel.
Semi-practical workshop taught by an experienced DIT.
Camera Testing and Evaluation
One-Day - Aimed at trainees, 2nd ACs and less experienced 1st ACs. Gives an understanding of what is
involved in camera testing and prep and how to do a successful test, including projecting lenses. Semipractical workshop taught by an experienced focus puller.
