Oral Presentations (5+5) Packet
Prior to the day's presentations, students will form their
presentation groups, with three or four students per group. The
instructor has final say about group membership. Presentation
groups might change from day to day. To earn credit, the group
must submit the required evidence: Presentation Group, Time Use,
Preparation and Delivery.
The presentation is scheduled to last five minutes. The question
and answer period is scheduled to last five minutes. I expect
one or two minutes of "down time" between presenters.
The presentation group should begin by each member introducing
himself or herself to the group. Then the group should decide
who presents first, second, and so on. Each presenter should
select his or her own timekeeper.
During a presentation, the roles within the presentation group
are presenter, timekeeper, and audience.
The presenter presents about the presenter's current research
topic: what it is, why it was chosen, the presenter's current
opinion on the topic, and why—really—the presenter holds this
opinion. When the presentation has concluded, the presenter will
answer questions from the audience. When the question and answer
period has concluded, the next presenter presents.
The timekeeper keeps track of the presenter's use of time. If
the presenter finishes early, then the timekeeper should "X" the
number of minutes used, applaud softly, and tell the group that
the question and answer period has begun. If the presenter has
not finished after five minutes, then the time keeper should "X"
the margin between presentation section and the question and
answer section, then applaud softly, and tell the group that the
question and answer period has begun. The timekeeper also keeps
track of time during the question and answer period. If the
presenter ends the question and answer session early, the
timekeeper should "X" the number of minutes used, and introduce
the next presenter. If the question and answer period uses the
entire five minutes, then, when that time has ended, the time
keeper should introduce the next presenter. The time keeper also
reports to the presenter and to the instructor how many of the
five minutes of the presentation period were used, and how many

of the five minutes of the question and answer period were used.
See Time Use, attached.
The audience is the rest of the presentation group, hopefully
one or two classmates. The audience listens attentively, does
not interrupt the presenter, and jots down questions to ask
during the question and answer session. The audience also
reports to the instructor about the presenter's preparation and
delivery. See Preparation and Delivery, attached.
Please remember to have each member provide information on the
Presentation Group form.
