1|Wound Care Nurse (W.C.N.) Training Wound Care Nurse – W.C.N. Course Wound Care Nurse – W.C.N certificate program is designed to provide Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical / Vocational Nurses with specialized knowledge so they can provide specialty care to patients with acute and chronic wounds. A certificate from OWCN demonstrates that an individual nurse has successfully completed a program of study in managing acute and chronic wounds and that course of study has met the standards of academic approval set by the academic advisory board of Organization of Wound Care Nurses (OWCN). The OWCN academic advisory board consists of healthcare professionals who periodically review certification requirements and examinations to assure uniform enforcement. The competency based examinations are written and peer reviewed by practicing healthcare professionals and educators to assure comprehensiveness and validity. Training Goals: Establish guidelines by which individuals may demonstrate competence in their discipline through certification testing. Establish recertification guidelines through current continuing education in a given discipline. Nurses working in different settings to accurately apply current treatment modalities and learned knowledge to their particular clinical practice. Provide a mechanism by which individuals who wish to enter, continue, and/or advance in their discipline by certification testing, adhere to the highest ethical standards. Eligibility Requirements: Must possess a license in good standing as an LPN/LVN or RN. Must have at least 6 months of nursing experience. Must pass the WCN written and skills test. Training Program: W.C.N. training program for Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN/LPN) and Registered Nurses (RN) offered during the conference is an all-day program which prepares them to function as “Wound Care Nurses". This course has didactic and practicum requirements. All students must successfully pass the both components of the course to receive the certificate and designation “Wound Care Nurse" (WCN). 2|Wound Care Nurse (W.C.N.) Training Course Objectives: Understand the definition of wounds. Understand the anatomy & physiology of the integumentary system. Understand phases of wound healing. Be able to identify and classify wounds based on their etiology. Understand types of wounds: Arterial/Ischemic, Venous, Diabetic/Neuropathic, Pressure, Traumatic, Surgical, Fungating/Malignant, Atypical and Burns.
