2014 Betel Home Foundation Annual Report Chief Executive Officer Angela Eyjolfson I am very pleased to present this year’s CEO report for Betel Home Foundation. It has been another year full of change, challenge and success as we wonder, “Where did the year go” and think to ourselves “Wow, we really did a lot last year”. Our focus on providing the highest possible quality of care and on improving the lives of every resident in our care continues to be what drives us to strive for excellence in our everyday work. We are very fortunate to have an outstanding group of staff and managers who give so much to Betel Home every day. It is not uncommon to see our staff and managers working extra hours, volunteering their time at events outside of work hours, or just checking in on weekends to make sure everything is running smoothly. They are the reason that our waiting lists are long and our respite bed is full and I can’t begin to thank them enough for their tireless commitment to our residents. Some of the highlights of our past year at Betel include: A very successful Bridging Accreditation Visit in October of 2013 and the approval by Accreditation Canada to pursue joint Accreditation with the Interlake Eastern RHA in June of 2015. Several improvements to our Selkirk facility including replacement of all handrails in the building made possible by a $19,000 grant from the Sir Thomas Cropo Foundation and renovation and furniture replacement for another 20 resident rooms. We were also fortunate to receive a $10,000 grant from the Selkirk and District Foundation to assist with this project. Continuation of the much loved music program in Selkirk thanks to an innovative cash calendar fundraiser implemented by our recreation manager in Selkirk, as well as through the generous support of our Board of Directors. The introduction of family information evenings where all family members are invited to receive information from and have the opportunity to meet with managers of all departments. The first events were held in January and were very successful. At our long service recognition teas held earlier this year, we were able to recognize a total of 21 employees with a grand total of 315 years service to Betel. Some of our goals for the upcoming year include: A focused effort on improving the resident dining experience. We are working toward making all of our resident dining areas more welcoming and homelike through minor renovation and décor changes. We will also be providing education for all staff on how to make dining very resident focused and as much like what you might experience in your own home as possible. We plan to completely re-vamp our quality improvement program – making it more user friendly and increasing the amount of information we are able to share with staff members on audit results and priorities for improvement. We will be receiving visits from Manitoba Health Standards in August and September and staff and managers are already hard at work ensuring all of our programs and processes will meet these stringent standards. Working towards some much needed major repairs in our Selkirk building. We are having major issues with the roof and the chimney and are awaiting completion of a much needed crawl space ventilation project. This funding would need to be approved through Manitoba Health – so Barry is working on the details of these projects with the IERHA. Working together with the Finance committee of the Board and the IERHA to develop a strategy to deal with our current budget pressures and combined year end deficit of $273,766. You will be receiving a more in-depth view of our financial situation in the audited statements presented by Gayanne, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gayanne for all of her hard work to ensure another successful audit. It continues to be an exceptionally challenging time for health care throughout our province and I am happy to say that despite the challenges, Betel Home has been able to maintain and remains committed to delivering safe, high quality resident care. I would like to say a sincere thank you to our Board of Directors – for your endless volunteer hours, your expertise and most of all for you support and your commitment to Betel home – we are very fortunate to work with such an outstanding group of people. Thank you also to the Betel Heritage Foundation for your support and your willingness to work alongside us as we deal with the many challenges of long term care. Finally, thank you to our managers, front line staff, medical staff, compass foods, our advisory committees and our many volunteers. It is truly an honour to work for such an outstanding organization and with such a committed and caring group of people. I look forward to another challenging year full of opportunity and success. 2
