Dear Historic Resources Committee Members: I am writing this letter in
December looking back at some of our accomplishments of 2012 and looking
forward into 2013 with many exciting initiatives. I can’t thank enough Jean
Carroon for her leadership as the 2012 HRC Chair. She provided leadership
and insight to the HRC that greatly benefitted our Committee by providing
tremendous content for our membership and reaching out to our partners
both internal to the AIA and our collateral organizations such as US/ICOMOS,
APTI, the National Trust and others. Read more.
Interview With W. Brown Morton, III, Hon. AIA
By Ashley Robbins Wilson, AIA
Since the 1970’s, preservation has increasingly become mainstreamed in architectural practice. The
architects that founded the modern preservation movement are now entering their seventies and
eighties. Not only did their work influence the profession through the establishment of laws, philosophy
and practice but they served as mentors to many of us that are now practicing preservationists. This
series sponsored by the Historic Resource Committee of the AIA and the Clemson/College of Charleston
Graduate Program in Historic Preservation was established to honor these groundbreakers. Each year a
preservationists is invited to a public forum in Charleston for a question and answer session about their
careers. The talk is transcribed by students, edited and then posted by the AIA. The inaugural year
hosted Hugh Miller, FAIA, and in 2012, Brown Morton, FAIA. William J. Murtagh, the first keeper of the
National Register, is scheduled for the spring of 2013. Click here for the Brown Morton Transcript.
