2015/16 Game Report Team Opposition Home/Away Competition Date Score Newcastle Eagles Under 18 Men Sheffield Junior Sharks H EBL Under 18’s North Premier 5th Dec 2015 Newcastle Eagles 76 - 79 Sheffield Junior Sharks Report The Eagles were looking to bounce back from two on the road losses when they entertained the Sharks in the league…. The boys in black were first off the mark straight from the tip off as joint top scorer Alex Horta layed the ball in…. The Eagles were very much on top in the 1st period as they dominated at both ends of the floor as their starting five players clicked into top gear and they controlled the tempo well closing it out at 28-22…. The 2nd quarter was a lot a closer and not as high scoring as the home team hit back to back 3s from Horta making it 35-25 by the 3rd minute… The middle section of the period saw the Sharks go on a 0-10 run as the boys in black missed a lot of scoring chances… The 2nd came to a close at 42-39 (14-17)… The 3rd period was another tough one for the home team as they started to run into foul trouble and had to run their bench more… The visitors capitalised as by the 7th minute it was all tied up at 52-52… The last 3 minutes saw both teams trade hoops and it was the Sharks who went into the break 2 points up at 56-58…. (14-19) The 4th quarter saw joint top scorer Tom Usher bag two from the free throw line to tie it up at 58-58… The Sharks then went on a quick 0-7 run to make it 58-65 by the 4th minute… The Eagles then hit straight back with another perimeter bomb and a lay up making it 63-65… By the 8th minute it was now Eagles 67- Sharks 72… The controversy came when in the 10 minute with the Eagles trailing by 2 points at 76-78… Van Oostrum was sent to the line for two shots, he missed the 1st and the 2nd in which he encroached over the line but he was first to the rebound and was supposedly fouled sending him back to the line where he made the 1st making it 76-79… He missed the 2nd and Alex Horta threw a hail Mary which hit the back board and ring but didn't drop…. The final score being 76-79 (20-21) Coach Heath said “It was a very tough loss after such a good game of basketball that the officials were allowed to decide the game and not the players… We, as a team, again played so well but for a small spell in which we didn't score and that hurt us in the end… Alex and Tom were outstanding with good support from Aaron Wilson…. We will have to re-group quickly for our cup match 24 hours later…” Eagles Scorers- Alex Horta 21, Tom Usher 21 and Aaron Wilson 16….
