Essential Question: What do good readers do to summarize informational texts? Target Question: What do good readers to identify opinions within a summary? I Can identify opinions within a summary Anticipatory Set: Students will discuss what a summary is. Teacher will ask students to think about a movie they have recently seen. Teacher will propose the “Summary in the Hand” as a strategy for remembering what a summary is. Procedures; Bellwork: (3 minutes) Students will write the EQ and TQ in their Monday section of the graphic organizer. Whole Group: The students will discuss the chart on page 11 of the RCC workbook. Teacher will read aloud the details, pointing out each detain in the box ends up in the summary at the bottom of the chart.(modified for sub, ask students to complete independently) Students will volunteer to cross out opinions. Teacher will give hint: words such as think, feel, and believe signal opinions. Modeled Instruction: The teacher will guide the students to find the correct responses for the passage “Snakes” page 12 on the promethean board.(mod student read silently.) Think Aloud: The teacher will think aloud “Snakes’ Place in the Food Chain” passage. Students will underline the central idea . The teacher will Think Aloud about the words and phrases that signal opinions, such as pronouns I and my. Whole Group: The group will discuss the Tier Two Vocabulary word “consumer” adding it to the word wall. Closure: Students will answer EQ and TQ . Assessment: EQ and TQ Homework: Assignment on i-Ready / any unfinished classwork. Interactive Homework with parentL6-21 Fact or Opinion Differentiated Instruction: i-Ready/ Special Services teacher will read to students. Teacher will redirect as needed. Essential Question/ Target Question/ Objective Essential Question: What do good readers do to summarize informational texts? Target Question: What do good readers do to analyze multiple answer choices to determine the best summary? I Can analyze answer choices and determine the best summary. Bell Work: The students will write the essential questions on weekly bell work organizer. 5 minutes Anticipatory Set: The students will discuss the essential question using accountable talk stems. 3-5 minutes Bellwork discussion of EQ and TQ (5 mins) Whole Group Instruction: Guided Instruction (25 minutes) The students will continue reading on page 13 “Snakes” Using the Study Buddy, Close Reading and the Hint, students will read “from Food Web.” Students will read for purpose, underlining the plants and animals – circling the names of the ecosystems. The teacher will call on a volunteer to share the sentence they underlined and circled Tier Two Vocabulary: Support Independently, students will answer the open ended question on page 15. Talk and Turn: Students will validate their answers with their elbow partners. Closure: The students will revisit the essential question during the last few minutes of class recording answers in organizer. Essential Question: What do good readers do to summarize informational texts? Target Question: What do good readers do to analyze and summarize informational texts? Bell Work: The students will write the essential question and target questions in their weekly organizers. (3-5 minutes) Anticipatory Set: Students will discuss the essential questions using accountable talk stems. (5 mins) Procedures: Bellwork and Anticipatory set: 5 mins Independently: Part 5: Common Core Practice Student will read the passage “Spiders: In Pursuit of Prey” independently without the assistance of Study Buddy. Differentiated Instruction: Teacher will read to students wha need assistance. Students will answer multiple choice items and write a text based response using “What does a 4 look like?” Whole Group: After reading is completed, the teacher will ask guided questions to check for comprehension of the text. Students will share answers from pages 17 and 18. Independently: Students will complete Part 5 Guided Practice exercises and answer the open ended response. Closure: The students will respond to the essential question. The teacher will assess using bingo dabber for correct responses and listing students who did not respond correctly for remediation.
