Students to learn density with GSK Science in the Summer™ on July 13, 2015
Presented by Museum of Discovery and Science at Hepburn Center
- Join in with this simple chemistry experiment on density Fort Lauderdale, FL, July 1, 2015 - Broward County area elementary students can participate
in GSK Science in the Summer™ (www.scienceinthesummer.com), a national program that is
committed to enriching young minds through its free summer science education program.
Through the program, second through sixth grade Broward County students will put on their
science hats (and goggles!) and study the wonders of Chemistry through fun, hands-on
experiments.
Sponsored by GSK and coordinated by the American Association for the Advancement of
Science (AAAS), GSK Science in the Summer™ classes are taught by science educators from
the Museum of Discovery and Science at Hepburn Center in Hallandale, at 750 Northwest 8th
Avenue, Hallandale Beach, 33009. The next class will occur on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 9 a.m.
with the following class occurring on Monday, July 27, 2015. Through simple, hands-on
experiments, GSK Science in the Summer™ helps students “grow into science” and gain firsthand knowledge of complex concepts.
As a follow-up to its first experiment release, which helped bring the joy of science into local
homes, GSK Science in the Summer™ is sharing a second experiment from its Chemistry
curriculum! Please note: for optimum safety, an adult should be present during all experiments,
and children should wear safety glasses when conducting experiments at home and schools.
Density Tower Experiment
1. The teacher or volunteer pours 50ml of cold water (green) into the graduated cylinder.
2. Students then pour the water into a nine (9)-ounce plastic cup.
3. Next, teacher or volunteer measure 50ml of oil and pour that into the same plastic cup.
What happens? Note that the two (2) liquids do not mix because they have different
densities. Ask them if oil is more or less dense than water.
4. Give the students a cork and a plastic block.
5. Invite the students to put a cork in the liquid in the cup. What happens? Is is less dense
than either liquid so will float above the oil.

6. Next, ask them to put in a plastic block. What happens? It will float between the oil and
the water. What can they say about the block?
