Course Description: This is a survey of eighteenth through twentieth-century British literary works of poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction prose. Texts will be discussed as works of art as well as documents reflecting different aspects of the era in which they were written. Classes will be a combination of class discussion and lecture.

Texts: The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Major Authors. Eighth edition only.

Grading: Two tests which may consist of matching, identification of quotations and terminology, and

/or short answer (20% each). The second exam will be the same length as the first but will be given during finals week, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1:30-2:30. The exam will not continue past 2:30 because it is NOT a retroactive final exam but covers the material assigned after the first exam.

Two papers (5-8 pages each) with topics chosen from the list on this syllabus (20% each).

Unannounced quizzes on the scheduled readings and lecture material. You can expect a quiz on the day a work is scheduled even if we are behind on the reading list (20%).

Paper Topics (first paper, due Oct. 15): Choose one pair of items for purposes of comparison, noting similarities and differences in such things as theme, style, originality, treatment of

contemporary issues. It is best to focus on one or two such subjects and go into them in detail.
