Seed-to-Plant Match Counting – Kindergarten
Grades: JK/SK
Location: Inside
Time: 30-45 minutes
Learning objectives: Where plants come from; matching; spelling/writing; oral communication (listening
to story); counting/numbers
Description: Students will hear a story about seeds. We will then look at some different seeds and
what plants grow from them.
Materials:
-
seeds to pass around and show students
colouring sheets with plant pictures and room to glue seed
seeds for gluing in colouring sheets (calendula, bean, pea, corn)
markers/crayons/pencil crayons
white glue
storybook about seeds and numbers (e.g. Ten Seeds by Ruth Brown; One Watermelon Seed by
Celia Barker Lottridge and Karen Patkau, etc.)
Activity Outline:
1) Read story to students. Discuss.
a. What are seeds?
b. Why do plants need seeds?
c. Can you think of any seeds that we eat?
2) Show students the different types of seeds. Can they identify them? (Show them the
drawings/worksheet and have them match the seeds to the plants.)
3) Students return to desks/tables.
a. Each student receives one worksheet, which they will start to colour.
b. Students will glue the appropriate seeds on the Xs under each drawing of a plant.
c. They will count the number of seeds and write the number in the blank space before the
name of the plant.
