The Spotlight is on Dorothy Dumford By Dorothy Mahlenkamp Contributor Birthdays are milestones in everyone’s life, but Dorothy Dumford had an extraordinary one when she turned 99 on October 12. This landmark event was celebrated with dinner at LaRosa’s, surrounded by her family. There were cheers coming from the staff at Oak Hills Nursing and Rehab, also. Dorothy lived her whole life in Price Hill, mostly at Gest Street near Eighth, and later on Murdock St. She was the second of eight children born into what would be a happy, boisterous family of five girls and two boys. All the children attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School. Reflecting on the many years that have past, Dorothy often thinks of her mother. “She was perfect. An Angel,” she said. As she was growing up, Dorothy loved to roller skate, and one day at a rink in Batavia in Clermont County, she met George Dumford, an outgoing, playful person. Dorothy was timid, but the two young people blended their personalities and created a happy couple. They were married at Blessed Sacrament church, in 1936. She was 21. Two years later, daughter Betty Dumford Kramer was born. As Dorothy’s brothers and sisters grew up, married, and had children, they provided Betty, an only child, with 32 cousins to play with. Betty’s cousin Ida and she were very close, and Ida became the sister Betty never had. The large, close family celebrated all major holidays together as well as birthdays, weddings, graduations, first communions. “There at least 50 of us so we often rented space in a church basement,” Betty said. When Dorothy was a young housewife she began perfecting her knitting, quilting and sewing skills and became a gifted seamstress. While her husband George was applying his trade as machinist at the G. A. Grey Company in Evanston over 40 years, Dorothy was a home- maker. Rather than join clubs and teams, she spent her time Dorothy Dumford with great-greatand grandchildren Kylee, 7, and Cole, 5 talents months, on her 99th birthday. creating amazing garments for her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made vests and a red hunting suit, for her grandson, and quilts for the family. Particularly memorable is a first communion dress that Dorothy made for her granddaughter that has since been worn by two great-granddaughters and will be worn by great-great-granddaughter Kylee on her First Holy Communion in May. Dorothy worked ten years at a tailoring shop on McMilllan Street doing alterations. where she had the privilege of serving former Cincinnati Reds player Johnny Bench. Dorothy has been under the care of Oak Hills Nursing and Rehab for two years, because of back problems resulting from a fall. She participates occasionally in activities at Oak Hills, but prefers reading the newspaper, watching WCPO evening news and thinking about her three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and her two sisters who are still living. She feels blessed.
