Pirates Past Noon: Teacher Guide Chapter 7 Lesson Plan **Note: Make sure students divulge at least one item that they would want to steal if they were a pirate and record. Please also make note of what kind of treasure map they choose to draw and where they decided to hide their treasure. We’ll hopefully be going on a treasure hunt next Tuesday. Introduction 1. Welcome! Share about your weekends. 2. Review the class rules and consequences a. Review the Pirates’ Articles and punishments Enrichment – Treasure 1. Introduction a. Last week, we learned facts about what it was like to be a pirate b. Today we will learn about why pirates chose to be pirates 2. Explain activity 3. Distribute “Pirate Treasure” chapter and light colored markers or highlighters a. Students will be highlighting important information as you read through the chapter b. Remind students that it’s best not to highlight too much, otherwise, you’ll have to read through many words all over again i. Tell students that they can highlight words that will remind them what a paragraph is about 4. Read through chapter section by section and as a class. (Either teacher can read or students can read) a. After each section, ask about the main ideas in each section and ask which words they highlighted. 5. After finishing the chapter, distribute the worksheet. a. Explain worksheet b. Explain that if they did a good job highlighting, it should be easier to find the answers quickly c. Students may draw anything relevant in the box, this is mostly for those who finish first. Pre-Reading 1. Review Chapter 5 a. Ask: What happened so far in the story? b. Ask: At the end of the last chapter, Jack and Annie made a discovery. What was that discovery? 2. Look at the title of Chapter 7: “Gale’s a Blowin’” a. Ask: What’s a “gale”? b. Ask: What do you think will happen in this chapter? c. Ask: When was the last time wind was mentioned in the book? (When Polly tried to catch up to Jack and Annie when they were in the row boat.) Chapter 7 1. Read Chapter 7 a. Ask class to read Chapter 7 silently. 2. Group Discussion a. Ask: What was Jack and Annie’s plan? (Run away to the tree house while the pirates dug for the treasure.) b. Ask: What was Jack and Annie’s goal? (Go home!) c. Ask: What was the weather like in this chapter? i. What was the weather like when Jack and Annie first arrived at the beach? (Sunny and warm) ii. What was the weather like at the beginning of the book? (Rainy & windy) iii. What do you think the author is trying to tell you by mentioning the weather? 1. How does thinking about cold, wet, windy weather make you feel? d. Ask: Did Jack and Annie’s plan go as planned? (No, it did not.) i. Why not? ii. What can we learn about Captain Bones by his actions? e. Ask: What do you think will happen next? i. Will Jack and Annie every get home? Why do you think that? ii. Do you think that Polly will come back into the story? Or do you think she will not return to the story? Why do you think that? 3. Post-Reading Activity: Make a Treasure Map! (Read below and distribute blank sheets of paper) a. Pretend that you have some valuable treasure that you want to hide somewhere in Adventures Ahead. i. Where would you hide it? ii. What tools would you need to retrieve it? b. Draw a map of the treasure so you don’t forget where it is!
