Health Research Board - National Psychiatric In-Patient Reporting
System (NPIRS) - 2011 Data notes
In order to ensure statistical accuracy when comparing data from different years, the following
information must be taken into account when comparing figures from the 2011 tables on the CSO
website (and in the printed annual reports).
All Admissions by Psychiatric Hospital, Year and Statistic (HRA44)
New Approved Centres:
O’Casey Rooms, Fairview Community Unit, Dublin

Orchard Grove, Ennis, Clare
Removed from Register of Approved Centres 2010:
Unit 9A Merlin Park Hospital, Galway
St Joseph’s Hospital, Limerick
These four admissions concern only two patients from the remaining male ward of St Joseph's
Hospital. These two patients were discharged to the Limerick Mental Health Service Rehabilitation
Unit to facilitate their transfer to a community residence however due to very serious behavioural
difficulties the service was required to re-admit both patients to St Joseph's Hospital. The service is
now reconfiguring/planning to develop an intensive rehabilitation facility to accommodate the
needs of such patients in the service

Psychiatric Unit and Hospital Admissions by Type of Admissions, ICD 10
Diagnostic Group, Mental Health Catment Area and Year (HRA46)
Admission numbers were used instead of rates for four areas: Mental Health Catchment Area 10
East Wicklow, Wexford, South/North Tipperary and Waterford
Catchment areas exclude independent-private and private-charitable centres, the Central Mental
Hospital, Dundrum; St Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service and Carraig Mór, Cork
Catchment populations for Areas 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are provisional and subject to change pending
confirmation from LHOs. The numbers involved however are small
Mental Health Catchment Area 10 (East Wicklow): Includes acute admissions from the Gorey area
following closure of the acute unit in St Senan’s Hospital, Enniscorthy
Wexford Mental Health Catchment Area: Includes acute admissions to St Senan’s Hospital,
Enniscorthy up to February 2011
Waterford/Wexford Mental Health Catchment Area: These areas were combined to form a new
extended catchment area. It includes acute admissions from Wexford previously admitted to St
Senan’s Hospital, Enniscorthy, from February 2011 and admissions for Waterford for the full year.
South/North Tipperary Mental Health Catchment Area: Admissions for patients from North
Tipperary were admitted to South Tipperary General Hospital up to October 2011 and are included
here
Figures for the Clare Catchment Area are listed in either Clare Mental Health Catchment Area or
Clare Mental Health Catchment Area (1). The later will be used from 2011 onwards as it includes
admissions from North Tipperary.
Carlow/Kilkenny/South Tipperary became a ‘new’ extended catchment area comprising the old
catchment area of South Tipperary and Carlow/Kilkenny. This is the new catchment area from 2012
onwards so it will have to be an additional category in the table.
