“Meet Ella. She’s eight years old and just finished 2nd grade. She loves to read, play with her American Girl doll and ride
her bike. She sings along to One Direction songs and loves macaroni and cheese. You may have seen her riding her bike
past your house, or maybe you’ve passed her in Tops when you were picking something up for dinner. What you probably
didn’t see are all the bruises her father gave her under her pink sequined t-shirt. We may have made Ella up but the sad
reality is that nearly 300 abused children were seen at the Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center in Olean last year. These
kids are your neighbors, they play soccer with your kid, you see them playing outside in the summer and they’re being
abused. So we’re asking you to Step Up and run or walk in the 2nd Annual Step Up for Kids 5K on Saturday, September
27th. All proceeds go to the Southern Tier CAC. Register online now at www.stcacstepupforkids.com. You can help; all you
have to do is Step Up.”

Press Release - Record Number of Child Seen at CAC
April 7, 2014
Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center Saw Record Number of Child Abuse Victims in 2013
OLEAN, NY, Apr. 7, 2014 – The Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center (STCAC) saw and treated 289 child abuse victims in
2013 at their Center located at 772 Main Street in Olean, a record high.
2013 proved to a busier year than normal for the STCAC, with nearly 300 children living in Allegany and Cattaraugus
counties being treated at the Center. Approximately 75% of the children victims were under the age of 12 and 95.6%
were cases of sexual abuse followed by 4.4% physical abuse cases.
“This is the highest number of victims we have seen in one year,” said Karen Hill, director of STCAC. “Many people are
well aware that child abuse exists, but not many people think it happens right in their own community.” She went on to
say that “this number would probably shock the public. These children are your neighbors, they play with your kids, they
in the same class as your children, and they’re being abused.”
This fall, the STCAC will hold its 2nd Annual Step Up for Kids 5K event to raise awareness of child abuse and to fundraise
for the Center as it is a non-profit. “You can help and you can make a difference, all you have to do is step up,” says Hill.
Last year the event had nearly 100 participants and all proceeds went to the STCAC.
