Canadian Standards Association (CSA International). .1 1.3 DEFINITIONS Materials and installation requirements where existing plant material is located in or adjacent to a construction area. CSA G30.5-[M1983(R1998)], Welded Steel Wire Fabric for Concrete Reinforcement. .1 Mycorrhiza : association between fungus and roots of plants. This symbiosis, enhances plant establishment in newly landscaped and imported soils. .2 Drip-line of trees: means the ground surface directly beneath tips of outermost branches, which shall not be less than 3.0 m radius from the trunk or may be larger as designated by the Contract Administrator. .3 Critical Root Zone of trees (CRZ): means the zone under a tree where there should be no disturbance before, during and after construction. The CRZ is established as being 10 centimetres from the trunk of a tree for every centimetre of trunk diameter. The protected zone may be larger as designated by the Contract Administrator. .1 Waste Management and Disposal: .1 Separate waste materials for reuse and recycling. .2 Remove from site and dispose of packaging materials at appropriate recycling facilities. .3 Collect and separate for disposal paper, plastic, polystyrene, corrugated cardboard packaging material in appropriate on-site bins in accordance with Waste Management Plan. .4 Separate for reuse and recycling and place in designated containers Steel, Metal, Plastic waste in accordance with Waste Management Plan. .5 Divert unused metal and wiring materials from landfill to metal recycling facility as approved by Contract Administrator. .6 Divert unused wood materials from landfill by alternative disposal approved by Contract Administrator. .7 Divert unused stone and aggregate materials from landfill to local facility approved by Contract Administrator. Obtain product approval from Contract Administrator prior to application. .3 Apply fertilizer in early spring at manufacturer's suggested rate. .4 Remove dead, broken or hazardous branches from plant material. .1 Fertilizer: .1 To Canada Fertilizer Act and Fertilizers Regulations. .2 Complete, commercial, slow release with 35 % of nitrogen content in water-insoluble form. .2 Anti-desiccant: commercial, wax-like emulsion. .3 Snow fence: Standard plastic fencing or approved equivalent in good condition, 1.2 m high. .4 T-bars: 2.4 m long steel T-bars; T-bars shall be straight. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS Nortrax 190 David Manchester Road, Ottawa 16 May 2014 32 01 90.33 TREE AND SHRUB PRESERVATION Page 3 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 IDENTIFICATION AND PROTECTION .1 Identify plants and limits of root systems to be preserved as approved by Contract Administrator. .2 Protect plant and root systems from damage, compaction and contamination resulting from construction as approved by Contract Administrator. .3 Soil compaction within the drip line of a tree shall be avoided at all times, unless otherwise agreed to in advance by the Contract Administrator. Placement of plywood, metal decks, sand, etc. will be considered prior to authorizing heavy equipment within the unprotected drip-line of all trees on this project. .4 Equipment shall not be allowed to operate, park, be repaired or refueled; not shall construction materials be stored or any earth materials be stockpiled within the barricades or within 2 m of the outer edge of the drip-line of a tree. .5 Ensure no pruning is done inside drip line. If pruning inside drip line is required consult an arborist or Canadian Certified Horticultural Technician (CCHT) as approved by Contract Administrator. .6 Barrier for tree protection: .1 To protect trees and shrubs in lawn areas or planting beds that are to remain the Contractor shall drive T-bars vertically 1.2m into ground, spaced maximum 3.0 m apart. The snow fence shall be wired at 3 places to each T-bar. The snow fence shall be stretched between posts to prevent sag. .2 The snow fence shall be erected to provide a continuous barricade between designated trees and the work area prior to construction. .3 The snow fence shall be placed at the critical root zone of the trees, unless inadequate to provide a 1.5 m buffer zone between the fence and limit of construction. With the permission of the Contract Administrator, the fence may be placed within the drip-line of the tree to provide the required buffer zone of 1.5 m but in no case less than 1 m from the outer circumference to the trunk of the tree. .4 When the trunk of trees are less than 4.5 m apart, the trees shall be considered a woodlot and the barrier shall be placed so it forms a continuous barricade around the woodlot as specified in the Contract Documents. .7 Trunk protection: .1 Where indicated by Contract Administrator, trunk protection shall be installed to a height of 2.4 metres or as prescribed by the Contract Administrator, wood laths shall be used (2” x 4” or other material as approved by Contract Administrator) and shall be temporarily installed parallel to the tree and around the complete Nortrax 190 David Manchester Road, Ottawa 16 May 2014 32 01 90.33 TREE AND SHRUB PRESERVATION Page 4 circumference of the tree by latching and / or wire. 3.6 PRUNING 3.7 ANTI-DESICCANT .8 Tree protection measures shall be maintained erect and in good repair at all times during construction operations, and shall be removed upon completion when agreed to by the Contract Administrator. Temporary removal of barricades will be considered only after reviewing the requirements with the Contract Administrator. .1 Where required, prune in accordance with Section [32 93 45 - Tree Pruning]. .2 Prune crown to compensate for root loss while maintaining general form and character of plant. .3 Branches 25 mm or greater in diameter that are broken due to construction operations shall be cut back cleanly on the tree side of the break or to within 10 mm of their base, if a substantial portion of the branch is damaged. .4 Roots 25 mm or larger in diameter that are exposed due to construction operations shall be cut back cleanly to the soil surface. .5 Bark that is damaged shall be neatly trimmed back to uninjured bark without causing further injury to the tree. .1 Apply anti-desiccant to foliage where applicable and as directed by Contract Administrator.
