Managing the non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Support
Access Permissions
Before you can manage the non-CRN NIHR
Infrastructure for a non-commercial study, you must
have a UK CRN Portal account and the appropriate
access privileges (roles). These are either:
 ‘Study Coordinator’, ‘Chief Investigator’ or ‘Record
Administrator’ roles for that particular study,
 ‘Topic Portfolio Manager’ role specific for the primary
topic of the study you wish to modify, or,
 ‘UK CRN Portfolio Manager’ role.
You can use My Profile to request these roles. You can
also assign these roles to other people using Contacts
Management or People Administration.
Step 1: Open a Study
1. Sign in to the UK CRN Portal as usual.
2. Click the Study Portfolio & Accrual link.
3. In the Add / amend details of an existing study
section, do one of the following:
 Click in either one of the Study ID, Study Title or
Acronym\Short Name boxes, type the study Id,
title or acronym as appropriate and click Search.
Open a study by double clicking its acronym.
The study opens in the Modify a Study wizard.
Step 2: Choose the non-CRN NIHR
Infrastructure Option for the Study
1. Select the Support & Funding tab of the Modify a
Study wizard.
2. Click in the box labelled If this study has sites in
England, will this study be supported by nonClinical Research Network NIHR Infrastructure at
one or more study sites? and select one of the
following available options:




Yes: if the study will be utilising non-CRN NIHR
infrastructure in at least one study site.
No: if the study will not be utilising non-CRN
NIHR infrastructure in any study sites.
Awaiting response: if the confirmation of
whether this study will be utilising non-CRN
NIHR Infrastructure has not yet been received
Not applicable: if the study does not have any
English sites.”
Note: If more than one study is found, select the
appropriate one from the list by double clicking on its
Acronym / Short Name.
 If the study is listed in the Your most recently
accessed studies section, open it by doubleclicking on its Acronym/Short Name.
Note: This field is part of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) for
all studies with a Portfolio Qualification Date after the 1 st of
April 2011. All MDS fields are required and must be
completed before a study can be approved and released to
the public Portfolio database.
3. If you’ve selected Yes, continue with Step 3.

The selected non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Centre is
added to the non-CRN Clinical Research Network
Infrastructure Centre field.
Step 3: Add a new non-CRN NIHR
Infrastructure Centre
The non-Clinical Research Network Infrastructure
Centre field is displayed.
5. To add more non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Centres,
repeat steps 1 to 4.
1. Click Add. The Add non-Clinical Research
Network Infrastructure Centre search window
opens.
6. Click Save.
Note: The Category column in the grid is displayed for
information only
Note: The tick-box allows the selection of a centre to be
deleted from the list. See Delete a non-CRN NIHR
Infrastructure Centre for more information.
Warning: If any of the required information is missing,
the Finish page will show a list of the outstanding items.
These must be completed before the study can be
released for approval.
Deleting non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Centres
If the study has non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Support
you can delete existing non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure
centres at any time.
2. In the Search box, type any part of the non-CRN
NIHR Infrastructure Centre name.
3. Click Search. The search result is displayed.
1. In the non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Centre field,
select the non-CRN NIHR Infrastructure Centre from
the list by ticking the appropriate checkbox.
2. Click Delete.
The Finish Page
1. Click the Finish tab.
2. Check the details you have entered are correct.
Note: If you wish to change any details, use the
tabbed menu on the left side of the page to go directly
to the appropriate page. You can also use the Next
and Previous buttons.
Note: The Category column is displayed for information
only.
4. Click Select to choose the non-Clinical Research
Network Infrastructure Centre from the results list.
3. Click Finish.
The study is initialised and is added to the system as a
draft. The study will not be displayed on the public
Portfolio database on the NIHR CRN CC website until it
has been released and approved.

We have started replacing the term “accrual” with the term “recruitment”. This
work is still in progress and until all systems change over to the new terminology,
the term “accrual” will continue to appear on parts of the Portfolio system.
