Technology in the Phonetics Class: An Integrative View
Why use Technology in the Phonetics class?
 Allows students to be creative.
 Students’ critical thinking is promoted.
 Students are engaged in activities in which they review what has been previously learned.
 Students feel highly motivated to work with a variety of media.
 Aural –Oral skills are improved
 Students have the opportunity to use diverse types of instructional software.

audio file given in this section. Practice as many times as necessary to associate symbol to
sound.

with. Texts should be of different level of complexity. Once both texts have been chosen, follow






CLASSROOM SETTING: Students get exposure to natural language in a stress-free
atmosphere.
MOTIVATION: movies and video provide common ground to students of any level of
proficiency. Given mixed ability classes, this is a valuable tool to empower students' language
use.
CULTURE AWARENESS: typical body language, real language in use, varieties of language
registers are some examples of situations students can observe when working with movies.
INTEGRATING SKILLS: comprehension through listening, opportunity to debate about what
is seen in the movie, reading signs/ posts from the background, etc. are all forms of language
which students are able to perceive in a natural way.
TASK BASED ACTIVITIES: learners are engaged in various tasks that promote significant
learning through hands on activities

 Integrating technology in the Phonetics class assists students and instructors to fulfill
an ample range of objectives.
 Technological tools prove to be very reliable instruments that allow the combination of
multiple skills, and the integration of different aspects of spoken language.
 The integration of different types of media not only benefits students in the
development of L2 skills, but also allows the inclusion of alternative teaching strategies that help
further those skills.
