2014 MCAT Study Materials Below is a compilation of the many MCAT preparation materials available to students who are planning to take the MCAT in 2013 or 2014, before the implementation of the new 2015 MCAT exam format. Studying for the MCAT can set you back quite significantly, with prices ranging from over $5000 to as low as $35, depending on what you are looking for and how much time and money you are willing to put into your studies. The type of preparatory courses and/or materials that you decide to use depends on what kind of learner you are and how comfortable you are with the material. If you feel you can motivate yourself fairly well, reviewing from the books and taking practice tests may be sufficient. If you are weak on the material covered in the MCAT or need extra motivation, the more comprehensive in-class or online course may be a better fit for you. In any of these cases, assess your learning style before planning your study schedule and buying the necessary test preparation materials. Based on a survey we did in 2010, about 50% of Dartmouth students self-study and 50% take some sort of class. There is no way a priori to ascertain which of these is “best” for a good performance on the exam for any individual. Please note that the Dartmouth College Health Professions Program does not endorse or support any of these study materials and/or test taking companies. This guide is primarily for students who want a price comparison of the most popular MCAT test preparation materials currently available in the market; this is by no means a comprehensive list of all the materials that are available. Out of all the test preparation materials, the practice material from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) will resemble the actual test the most. So whatever you decide to use for your MCAT preparation, make sure that you take at least one official test from the AAMC under timed conditions to get an accurate understanding of what the test will be like.
