NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
FROM RRLC AND RRLC MEMBER LIBRARIES – February 2015
RRLC NEWS
OUR WORK IS CUT OUT FOR US!
Cuomo Flat on Libraries
In his Budget message, January 21, Governor Andrew Cuomo retained Library Aid at the level
that was passed and approved last year – $86.627 million. This action on his part is an
improvement over last year when he cut funding - which then had to be restored by the
Legislature – which also added an additional $1 million.
This is still far below the $102.4 million in Library Aid received before the recession.
Library Advocates are to be thanked for getting the Governor to recognize, at least at this
minimal level, that libraries form a key part of the education infrastructure in New York.
What is NYS Library Aid used for? It is the major source of funding for the RRLC Continuing
Education and Digitization programs, and in fact supports all RRLC services. The Hospital
Library Service Program and the Medical Information Subsidy Program both are State funded,
as is Coordinated Collection Development for Academic Libraries (CCDA). Both MCLS and
PLS and the five School Library Systems are all reliant on NYS Library Aid.

What Can You Do?
We all need to be out there talking to our legislators - in their district offices and on NYLA
Library Advocacy Day, February 25. Our theme this year is "Libraries ARE Education" – and we
are asking for an increase to Library Aid that matches the percent increase that Education
receives – 4.8%.

RRLC ILL DIRECT
RRLC member public libraries borrow directly from four RRLC academic libraries using ILLiad
ILLiad is the electronic system available from OCLC that can be used to request items through
interlibrary loan. RRLC public libraries are able to create ILLiad accounts with four participating
RRLC academic libraries. Loan requests are integrated into the regular ILL workflow at the
academic libraries. Loaned materials are shipped and returned using the public library system
delivery serviceand the RRLC delivery service.
Initially two public libraries, Fairport Public Library and the Rochester Public Library Central
Science Division, set up accounts are were able to borrow from the libraries at SUNY Geneseo,
SUNY Brockport and Nazareth. The project has expanded to include St. John Fisher College
and Penfield, Webster and Gates public libraries.
The public libraries are able to provide the ILL for free and report that this provides a valuable
service for patrons.
RRLC would like to encourage more public and academic libraries to share resources through
RRLC ILL Direct. Interested in participating? Contact Barbara Ciambor, RRLC Outreach
Librarian at bciambor@rrlc.org.

Leadership Institute beginning in
June!
RRLC is pleased to present Lead From Where You Are - a leadership institute
beginning in June 2015. This institute focuses on a personal approach to leadership determining your personal leadership style and cultivating the leader inside you. This is
targeted to emerging leaders, but is also appropriate for current leaders and is open to
RRLC and NY 3Rs Association members. This program is about defining, integrating,
and articulating your personal leadership style - the quality of your inner leader is
reflected in the quality of your impact. We will accomplish this by addressing 5
elements:
Shape - Explore, define and articulate your inner leader (June 24, 9am-4pm)
Serve - Build emotional intelligence and explore its relevance to leadership (July
29, 9am-4pm)
Style - Assess your communication style, create rapport, and engage your
audience (August 26, 9am-4pm)
Speak - Strengthen your speaking skills and ability to paint vivid, compelling
pictures (September 30, 9am-4pm)
Shine - Integrate all elements in a presentation that articulates your leadership
philosophy and style (October 28, 9am-4pm)
Applicants for this institute will attend all five sessions and will deliver a presentation to
the group during the final session. Applicants should complete the application, which
includes a letter of recommendation and support from your work supervisor or library
school advisor/professor. Applications will be accepted beginning February 1st, and the
deadline to apply is May 1st. We will review each application upon submission, and will
notify accepted applicants once the application is approved. If you have any questions,
contact Laura Osterhout by email or phone at (585) 223-7570, ext 107.
Fee for this program: $350
*this fee includes lunch each day, all course materials/handouts, and a mp4 copy of
