Grade One:
Beat







Perform the beat: pat, step, stomp, snap, etc.
Feel and express the beat through walking and other movements
Demonstrate beat using motions while performing songs and chants
Sing and point to a representation of beat
Demonstrate understanding of beat by speeding up or slowing down when the tempo
changes
Determine the number of beats in a phrase for multiple songs
Sing songs while using a beat chart

Two-Beat Meter








Perform strong and weak beats
o Ex: Bounce High: sing the first four beat with the following motion: pat,
shoulders, pat, shoulders
Point to a representation of strong and weak beats
Sing song with rhythm syllables while performing strong and weak beats
Identify and feel strong and weak beats
Determine which beats are strong
Determine which beats are weak
Perform strong and weak beats through conducting
Present the notation

Grade Two:
Half Note






Sing a song and keep the beat  Ex: Here Comes a Bluebird
Sing a song and clap the rhythm
Sing and point to a representation of phrases two and four
Sing a song, walk the beat, and clap the rhythm
Determine the number of beats in phrase two
Determine which beat has the new musical element






o Sing phrase 2 while keeping the beat
Label the sound: A sound lasting for two beats is called a half note
Perform known phrases with half notes on “loo”
Present the rhythm syllable
o Half Note = ta-ah
Present the half note in stick notation
o Half Note = a non-filled note head with a stem
Read the rhythm pattern using rhythm syllables















