Medication Drop-off
La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility is still accepting certain unwanted
pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medications.






Prescription medications (Non-controlled only. We DO NOT accept controlled
medications)
Over-the-counter medications
Pet Medications
Medicated ointments and lotions
Inhalers
Liquid medications in leak-proof containers
Visitors should follow these instructions when using the public disposal containers or visiting
the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility
1. Place medication, including pills and liquids, in a plastic, sealed bag and place in
container
2. Leave liquid medications in their original container
3. Obscure personal information with a black felt tip marker
4. Place needles and sharps in approved sharps containers only
5. Chemicals and cosmetics should be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous
Materials facility

Sharps
Household generated “Sharps” are accepted at the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials
Facility FREE of charge from La Crosse County residents who treat themselves for medical
conditions such as diabetes. (Business and out-of-county generated “Sharps” are accepted
by appointment and for a fee.)
Only the following are accepted:
Needles
Syringes
Lancets
Test Strips
NO mercury-containing waste (thermometers, button/hearing aid batteries),
chemotherapy waste, solid waste, hazardous waste or other regulated medical
waste should be included in the sharps container.
Procedure:
•Place the “Sharps” in puncture resistant containers (either a registered red “Sharps”
container or a thick plastic laundry detergent bottle with a screw type cap). NOTE: If the
“Sharps” are in a container other than the two listed above, they will not be accepted.
•Label the container “SHARPS” and lock the lid.
•Bring the container to the Hazardous Materials Facility.
Business and non-resident users will need to pre-register, make an appointment, and pay
$1.50 per pound for “Sharps” disposal.
