Recommendations are only applicable if staying in the destination country the entire time of the study abroad
travel. Travel to other countries may increase risk or change recommendations regarding vaccinations or
medications. Please be sure to include ALL plans on your initial travel form submitted to Norris Health Center,

If you plan to use NHC for travel health services, please contact Norris Health Center well in advance of travel (6-12
weeks) for an appointment. You will need to complete and submit a travel history and immunization form prior to

Recommended Vaccines (if traveling to Iguazu Falls, Acre, Amapa, Amazonas, Distrito Federal, Brasilia, Goias, Maranhao,
Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso du Sul, Minas Gerais, Para, Rondonia, Roraima, Tocantins, and designated areas of Piaui, Bahia, Sao Paulo,
Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.)

Yellow Fever
Strongly Recommended Vaccines
Hepatitis A (booster in 6-12 mo.)
Typhoid Fever oral vaccine (#4 tablets) or Typhoid Fever injectable
Recommended vaccines( if not up to date with routine shots)
Hepatitis B series of 3
Influenza
MMR (measles , mumps, rubella)
Meningococcal Meningitis
Pneumococcal (over 65, or chronic disease, or immunocompromised)
Polio
PPD – TB skin testing recommended prior to travel for all planning to stay > 3 months
Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) Due to frequent pertussis outbreaks worldwide, all travelers should receive Tdap vaccine every 10 years,
assuming an adequate primary series. Those who received TD or TT for their most recent booster should receive an immediate dose of Tdap, regardless
of interval since the last tetanus dose
Varicella (chicken pox)
Malaria - Depends on specific travel plans. None needed in Rio de Janeiro.
Medications and Supplies
Ciprofloxacin for self- treatment of traveler’s diarrhea
Deet 30% insect repellent spray - 2 oz. (non aerosol) or Deet Ultrathon 34% insect repellent 2 oz. lotion
Hand sanitizer
Loperamide for mild diarrhea
Meclizine for motion sickness
Travel Kit (acetaminophen, meclizine, loperamide, hydrocortisone, bacitracin, thermometer strip, band aids, hand
sanitizer, rehydration salts)
