Professional Learning with Teamworks
At the heart improving the life chances of all children is effective
teaching.
At the heart of effective teaching is professional learning that
improves practice for all teachers throughout their career.
Our programme has been developed to provide high quality learning
for teachers; the programme design is informed by research about
what has been shown to work in improving teacher learning and
practice. There are two elements: our taught programme and
bespoke support for schools and teachers from our Specialist Leaders
of Education.
The Taught Programme.
Our professional learning taught programme is organized into three
strands: Stimulating Change, Embedding Change and Transforming
Practice and Pedagogy. The courses are colour coded on our
calendar into the three strands below:
Stimulating change: one day
conferences/activities designed to introduce
teachers to new practices and ideas.
Embedding change: short programmes to
support teachers develop new areas of practice
and pedagogy
Transforming practice and pedagogy: sustained
Professional Learning over longer time period to
further develop skills and knowledge
3
Bespoke Professional Learning and Support.
Our team of SLEs are experienced and successful practitioners who
cover all phases from early years to secondary. They are available to
work one to one with individual teachers /departments or to work
within a whole school context. The following table shows how SLEs
may be used by a school.
Mentoring: working with teacher/s on specific
aspects of pedagogy and practice at key
moments of transition/concern.
E.g. auditing RE/SMSC provision for the new
curriculum, supporting a new Head of
Department/struggling NQT.
Specialist Coaching: a structured, sustained
process for enabling the development of a
specific aspect of a professional learner’s
practice.
E.g. developing the planning of writing across a
key stage; establishing a coaching culture.
Collaborative (Co-) Coaching: a structured,
sustained process between two or more
professional learners to
enable them to embed new knowledge and
skills from specialist sources in day-to-day
practice.
E.g. co-planning and teaching a maths unit of
work using a Lesson Study approach;
secondment to a leadership team to build
capacity.

RE/SMSC
Teamworks are working with Pennine Learning to support the establishment
of a hub for RE within Calderdale. As part of support for RE and SMSC we can
offer:
1. RE and SMSC review and action planning
RE is now specifically mentioned in the new Ofsted Handbook and the place
of SMSC also has a renewed profile, with links to ‘British values’. This is a
review and realistic action planning with support for senior leaders in
identifying strengths, weaknesses and potential in RE and SMSC in school.
- Half day review (and ongoing support) for action plan
- Checks compliance with requirements and guidance on curriculum,
SMSC and British values
- identification of strengths, weaknesses and opportunities
- Provision of audit/self-evaluation tool as part of process (electronic
and paper formats)
Normal guideline cost for half day review and provision of audit tool – £175
2. Staff training on new RE syllabus
The new RE syllabus is mandatory for all maintained schools and CE
academies. (Other academies must choose another RE syllabus if they don’t
use this one). In school, tailor-made training offers a flexible and economic
way to make sure staff are briefed and equipped. This can be offered flexibly
to individual schools or clusters as a half day or twilight session, including:
- Information and briefing on new syllabus
- Demonstration of resources that support it
- Practical strategies for teaching and learning
- Assessment
Normal guideline cost for an individual school is £120 twilight; £150 half day.
Clusters by arrangement.
3. Equality and Inclusion: Challenging homophobic language and
attitudes
Support for schools reflecting the increasing profile and importance of this
area (specific references now in Ofsted handbook)
15
a. Staff Awareness training
Informed and stimulating training for a staff twilight session, equally
important at primary and secondary phases.
- Promoting an inclusive community in classes and across the
school
- Legal and Ofsted expectations (also Church of England guidance
as appropriate)
- Challenging homophobia in the classroom and whole school
- Resources and ideas for school and classroom activities
b. Health Check and Audit
A health check and audit offers the opportunity to focus on your present
situation, reflect on areas to develop and build a strategic plan for the future.
It includes a comprehensive kit including an audit tool and guidance.
We also hope to offer a new programme for RE leaders, details to follow:
RE for the Future – an opportunity for emerging leaders in RE
An RE Learning community for leaders of the future. A programme of four
half days focused round rigorous development of subject knowledge and
exploration of practical pedagogy. There will be input from both academic
and faith perspectives.
- This learning will be linked to experience in the classroom between
sessions, through reflection on impact, exploring which strategies are
effective for learning.
- It will also be a focus to offer new and varied experiences of leadership,
nurturing confidence and skills to support and train other practitioners.
NB these programmes are to booked directly with Pennine Training.
