The quartet gave several concerts in London and also for the Budleigh Salterton Festival, Dartington International Summer School, Royal Welsh College of Music, Cardiff, South Creake, North Norfolk, and Corbridge Festival Northumberland. For their concerts for the ROSL, as part of its sell out Edinburgh Festival Fringe series, as well elsewhere the quartet performed works written for them by New Zealand composers Gareth Farr, David Hamilton and Robbie Ellis. In addition to performances, coaching and master-classes from leading UK teachers, the quartet were given tickets for concerts by international orchestras and musicians at the Wigmore Hall, London, BBC Promenade concerts and at the Edinburgh International Festival. Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and The Taming of the Shrew at the Globe Theatre amongst other theatrical excursions also made a strong impression. As the quartet returned to New Zealand to complete their studies at the University of Auckland, they take with them a range of unforgettable experiences collectively and individually on which they can draw and develop for years to come. IN THEIR OWN WORDS – PAST SCHOLARS REFLECT ON THE PETTMAN/ROSL ARTS EXPERIENCE Looking back at the time we spent in the UK during last July/August, it seems only now I can fully comprehend what an incredible time we all had and what a beneficial experience it was. It was a very revealing and demanding period travelling as a quartet, performing so often and being exposed to some of what’s on offer in that part of the world. London is certainly an incredible place and the opportunity to travel to Dartington and Budleigh-Salterton provided a fitting contrast. Everything was very well organised and though we had a very hectic schedule at times I never felt overwhelmed, only stimulated and excited for the content of each upcoming week. Nicholas Hancox viola Antipodes Quartet Winner of the 2006 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship I grew so much musically during this experience and came away inspired and with my eyes opened to the many opportunities out there. For young New Zealand musicians it is imperative that there are opportunities such as this to experience musical life abroad..... after the success of the trip, I can’t wait to return to London for postgraduate study in September 2010. Helen Bevin viola, Duo Giocoso Winner of the 2008 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship Personally, the trip couldn't have come at a better point in my career and education. Attending summer courses and getting consultation lessons from so many renowned teachers opened my eyes up to the standard of students and teaching in the UK, and definitely spiked my interest in further studies there once I complete my studies in Vienna. It was really useful to see how things are now so that I can plan in advance and keep in touch with the teachers I have met. When you go on this tour, make sure you completely immerse yourself in the WHOLE experience. Don't hold back and miss a concert here and there, really go all out and do even more than what is organised for you (which in itself is a whole lot; ballet, opera, Proms, Shakespeare...the list goes on!), because you are only here once in such amazing circumstances where everything is provided for you! It really is quite unlike anything any of us will ever experience again. Maria Mo piano, Leonari Trio Winner of the 2009 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship I would have to say that this trip has been one of the most memorable times of my life .....Going to see the Proms in the Queen’s Box or watching Martha Argerich perform, just some of the things being in New Zealand, I never thought could be possible. Emma Yoon violin Lazarus Quartet Winner of the 2010 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship My experience of the ROSL ARTS/Pettman Scholarship tour was just mind-blowing. We were fully occupied the entire day starting with early morning coaching and rehearsals to late night concerts and operas....the entire trip was life changing and eye opening. My Quartet now knows that there are so many opportunities out there for everyone. Julianne Song violin Lazarus Quartet Winner of the 2010 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship My favourite lesson would have had to be with David Takeno...He invited us to have tea with him and we sat for maybe 30 minutes just discussing quartet repertoire and our lives in New Zealand. When it was time for the lesson to begin, he had us run through our entire quartet repertoire for him. After sitting silently through the whole programme, he then spent two hours telling us stories all about our pieces, helping us to find hidden details everywhere! When it suited his stories we would play (or sing) but for most of the time he was simply concerned with passing on information. It’s hard to convey how inspirational this lesson was. Lindsay McLay viola Lazarus Quartet Winner of the 2010 Pettman ROSL ARTS International Scholarship The last week of the trip was the ROSL Edinburgh Festival series. Being able to play in concerts alongside other great musicians gave me a preview of how things might be a few years down the track. And my feat of playing solo Bach to a sold out audience at 9.30am is something I am very proud of and will definitely never forget!Alice Gott cello Lazarus Quartet Winner of the 2010 Pettman/ROSL ARTS International Scholarship My highlight of the tour was definitely the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland........the atmosphere buzzing ......We performed concerts every day at some crazy times (9.30am and 10.30pm...) Each day consisted of waking up early, rehearsal, concert, shopping, late night shows,.....Imagine doing this for a whole week!
