SCOTTISH EQUINE BREEDERS ASSOCIATION Secretary:Mrs Jane Barry Ceann-na-Coille Upper Braefindon Culbokie By Dingwall Ross-shire IV7 8GY Tel: 01349 877266 e-mail: kinkellshetlands@btinternet.com PRESS RELEASE SEBA SCOTTISH BRED HORSE / PONY OF THE YEAR 2011 In the Spring of 2011, the Committee of SEBA decided to establish an annual competition to highlight the achievements of Scottish bred equines, in order to raise the profile of Scottish bred equines. The Chairman of SEBA, Dougal Dick of the Transy Stud, kindly offered to donate a trophy for the winner (the Transy Perpetual Trophy), and all finalists will receive specially commissioned rosettes. The SEBA member organisations were invited to seek nominations from within their own organisation, and each group then selected the animal they wished to put forward to SEBA as their finalist. The horse or pony nominated did not have to be a Scottish breed, but must have been bred in Scotland. There are currently 13 members of SEBA (Highland Pony Society, Pony Breeders of Shetland Association, Clydesdale Horse Society, Eriskay Pony Society, Scottish Sports Horse Society, Scottish Welsh Pony & Cob Association, Scottish & Borders Connemara Group, Exmoor Pony Society, Fell Pony Society, Dales Pony Society, Thoroughbred Breeders Association, NPS Scotland, and BHS Scotland). Once all the finalists were decided, the member organisations were asked to vote for their choice of winner (they were not allowed to vote for their own nomination). There has been a great deal of interest from SEBA members, and resulted in a total of eleven finalists going forward to the final vote. The winner of the 2011 Award is the 11 year old Highland Pony gelding – Trowan Moulin – owned and bred by Robert Davidson, Crieff, Perthshire, and the runner up is the 4 year old fell Pony stallion – Bracklinn Jackpot – owned and bred by I & M Smith, Greenloaning, Perthshire. Trowan Moulin (by Ruaridh of Mendick and out of Trowan Mishka) has had a fantastic career, which began with him being champion gelding at the Royal Highland Show as a three year old. He has gone on to be ridden champion at the Highland on three occasions, a record in recent times. He is also unique in twice winning the Ridden Highland Championship at Blair, the Highland Breed Show Ridden Championship twice, where he has also won the dressage, working hunter and Overall Supreme of the Show. Moulin has been Best of breed at Olympia, and placed at HOYS on every visit. In 2011, at 11 years old, he proved he is as good as ever by winning the Gold Medal Final, Baileys Open Ridden Final, and Silver Medal overall championships at Blair, when competing against all the native breeds. In addition to his competitive career, Moulin is regularly used to check sheep and move cattle on the hill farm, and is first class transport over the roughest terrain. Moulin is a fine example of the versatility, hardiness and generous temperament of the Highland Pony. Bracklinn Jackpot (by Carrock I’m Yer Man and out of Southolme Beauty) has been a prolific winner in the showring, despite still only being a youngster. Amongst his many wins he has been Supreme M & M Champion at Blair as a yearling in 2008, and again as a 2 year old in 2009, Reserve M & M Champion at the Royal Highland in 2008, and Supreme M & M Champion and Reserve Cuddy at the Royal Highland in 2011, and Supreme M & M Stallion Champion at NPS Summer Show at Malvern in 2009, going one better in 2011 Being Supreme Overall M & M Champion, Silver Medal Final Champion and winner of the Gold Medal. Jackpot had a quiet year in 2010 attending only one show due to stud duties at home, and his progeny are now coming out in the show ring, with one already exported to Denmark. His owners state that he has been a bold character from the day he was born, but is a quiet and placid stallion with the ability to put on a show when required. The other finalists for 2011 were as follows: Attraction (10 year old Thoroughbred Mare) owned and bred by the Duke of Roxburghe, Kelso Bellindene Franklyn (10 year old Connemara Pony Stallion) owned and bred by Julie Somervail, Jedburgh Craigmancie Gold (13 year old Sports Horse Stallion) owned and bred by Alex Midler, Insch Cuil Ruaridh (16 year old Eriskay Pony Gelding) owned by Katherine Hamilton, Huntly, and bred by the late Malcolm Macalister Hall, Argyll Firthwell Champagne Charlie (4 year old Show Hunter Pony Gelding) owned and bred by Elizabeth Jackson, Roslin HRE Dollar (12 year old Shetland Pony Gelding) owned by Elinor Bosanquet, Dyce, and bred by Helen Thomson, Shetland Kilmannan Black Wizard (12 year old Dales Pony Gelding) owned by Gill Simpson, Derbyshire, and bred by Bill Ireland, Blanefield Stonedge Samuel (10 year old Welsh Section A Stallion) owned and bred by Robin & Sally Athey, Bonchester Bridge Utter’s Hill (21 year old Exmoor Pony Gelding) bred by May & Bob Jones, Penicuik, and owned by Vivien Taylor, Fort Augustus The presentation of the trophy and rosettes will take place at the SEBA AGM on Thursday 29 March 2012 at Auchterarder.
