Group 1 Group 2 - Assess student orientations. Enforce prerequisites at the door. Don’t put off specific courses till the end. We need to look at our students coming to us with different goals, we have to have a balance to be successful. Require courses in their first semester. We don’t have enough counselors to meet with every student. Time management planning skills. 15 to finish initiative doesn’t fit our student population. Their needs to be a balance between efficiency, counselors are over worked, resources are needed to increase the counseling staff. Students need to meet with a counselor. Mandatory advising prior to the incoming semester, utilizing faculty advising. Institute learning communities. Students who stop coming need to be withdrawn from their courses. Mechanism to follow up with students. We need to know our students goals. We need to be more clear on what they plan to do. Understand that our college culture is foreign to our students, we need to be more transparent, provide orientation. Set students up their first semester with courses that will inspire them. More counselors to be able to provide specific information and provide short-term success. Time management skills. Facilitate study groups campus wide (in Paina). Infrastructure that allows our students to stay on campus and hang out. Develop cohort models within our programs (weekend/evening college). Group 3 - Drop off childcare for students and faculty. Streamline process when students stop coming to class. Student peer mentor program. Faculty support, new teaching pedagogy (a lot more we can do in the classroom). First time fulltime identification of students. Create an environment to encourage student socialization (more tables around campus). Create and support study groups. More personal support counseling, services, training. Group 4 Give students the big picture. They need to know their requirements, they need to develop a relationship with their instructor. Work with our HS early on (tracks). Identify courses that are motivational and inspirational. Give them a realistic picture of industry. Field trips. Need to know our students better. Create a withdraw policy/system for students that don’t show. Create a cohort system for our programs. Additional financial support (tuition keeps rising). What are some steps we can take to improve student career planning when students first enroll? Group 2 - Workshops on careers prior to registering for courses. Mechanism to support students with their self-exploration (it’s ok if you don’t know). Do more as program coordinators to help students sort through their majors. Create a career center on campus where students can explore. Group 3 - Offer class observations for HS students. Career shadowing. Students need to know that the AA degree is a steppingstone to a bigger degree. Offer our IS 105 course on a regular basis. Develop a broader service learning experience for incoming students. More funding for student employment. Expose students to our own personal fields. Facilitate career exploration as a campus. Hire a career counselor. Improve student educational goals. On campus internship opportunities. Mandatory career exploration. Maui mentoring project with interested professionals. Students need to know that it is ok to change. How can we strengthen our student data management systems to understand student intent and improve graduation rates? Group 1 - Unauthorized withdrawal as a grading option. More faculty and staff trained in STAR. Tracking student contact with counselors. Screening process for students during student orientation. Centralized data management system to monitor student contact with the whole campus (faculty, counselors, lecturers). Mechanism to identify student intent (major). Create a general studies major. Sustained contact with someone at the campus (faculty advisor, counselors, mentor). Group 2 - Create a “Life Long Learner” category in our system Create a system so life long learners don’t have to apply every semester. Use our data more efficiently. Create more relationship with our students Create a campus wide system to track student contact. Group 3 - STAR Training for faculty and students. Streamline information on our website and Laulima. Cross campus scavenger hunt utilizing STAR and Laulima Group 4 Utilize major options in BANNER, Need to be able to designate sub majors in BANNER. Need to understand our student’s goals, need to know why they are here. STAR Training or tip sheet. How can we infuse student life with faculty toward helping students make connections to faculty outside of the classroom? Group 1 - Use technology like Skype. Encourage more participation. Group 2 - Meet with Students throughout their academic career. Meet with student Student to student and peer engagement Once a month lunch with faculty (lunch bunch). Utilize Skype or technology for face to face contact. Weekly group review sessions. Knowing who our first year students are . Group 3 Group 4 - Utilizing our outside space more efficiently (trees, tables). Potluck the week before classes (Reception for students) Need to be consistent on how we market ourselves out in the community (The Launch). Permanent booth at Queen Kaahumanu or tables out in Longs or Walmart. Make it easy for our students to get into the college. Provide social service resources for our students. Obtain/create a customer relation management system that will help track students (as soon as they are enrolled) and allow all instructors, counselors, etc. to input data and services rec’d throughout their educational journey ( esp. 1st year) 2.
