Post Surgical Care of Your Pet
Your pet is now recovering from surgery. Just like people, they require special
attention during the days following their return home. Please follow the
recommendations outlined below.
1.) Please try to prevent running and jumping for 2 weeks following surgery.
Dogs must only be permitted minimal leash exercise (for bowel
movements/ urination) and be supervised while outside during this time.
Cats should be kept indoors for this period.
2.) Sutures should be kept dry. If your pet is licking or chewing at the incision
site, please call the clinic to arrange for a special collar or cream to
discourage licking/ chewing.
3.) If antibiotics or other medication(s) have been dispensed for your pet,
please be certain to administer them as prescribed. This will aid your pet’s
recovery.
4.) At the time of discharge we will make arrangements for a recheck of the
incision and/ or suture removal (no additional charge) 7-14 days (as
specified on your invoice) from the date of surgery.
5.) If your pet has been discharged the same day as the surgery, offer only a
small amount of food that evening. If vomiting does not occur after 1 hour,
feed your pet ½ of your pet’s regular food portion for that meal. If vomiting
does occur try again in a couple of hours. You may return to your pet’s
regular feeding schedule the following day.
Please contact Strait Veterinary Hospital 625-5757 if any concerns arise.
If after hours please phone our Emergency Service 902-295-3440.
