Recent Prior Experience:
In previous lessons Ss have been focusing on their personal and family’s identity. This lesson will progress from that and look at comparing their identity and
experiences with others in the classroom, with a focus on cultural diversity.

Clear space for discussion and activity. T
must also be sensitive and mindful of any
cultural issues or racism that could evolve
form discussions.

SS completion of worksheet will indicate
their ability to investigate cultural diversity
in the classroom.
Ss contribution to discussion during closure
will reveal their understanding of diversity
and the experiences in life that make us
who we are today

INTRODUCTION
10 mins
T introduces lesson by explaining that every person has
unique life experiences that form their identity.
SS contribute to cultural diversity brainstorm.
T begins lesson by explaining that each
person in the class has had difference
experiences in life that have shaped who
they are today. T explains the idea of
cultural diversity.
T asks Ss for some examples of experiences
in people’s lives that make people different
from each other. T writes brainstorm up on
IWB.
IWB with brainstorm cloud –
headings ‘cultural diversity’
Development
20 minutes
T explains the purpose of the task: to find out about the
cultural diversity in our class.
T gives task instructions.
T explains that Ss we be doing an activity to
help us find out more about the people in
our class. T tells Ss they will be discovering
the life experiences which influence the way
they are today.
T explains each S will be given a worksheet
with a list of 15 statements. Each S needs to
fill in the sheet by finding a student in the
class who has experiences the statement
and record their name. All 18 statements
must be matched to a name.

T checks for Ss understanding of the task.
T reads over worksheet to ensure they
understand each statement.
T explains that Ss will have 15 minutes to fill
in the sheet.
Worksheets distributed.
T asks class secretaries to hand out the
worksheets and ensure that each child puts
their name on the sheet before beginning.

T reminds Ss to keep voices down so all Ss
can hear what each other is saying.
Activity commences
Activity commences. T warns when there
are 5, 2 and 1 minutes to go.
T asks all Ss to freeze and to stop, look and
listen. Ss are to form a circle on the floor
with their completed worksheet in hand.
Closure
10 minutes
Class discussion on what was learnt about others in the
classroom. Ss discuss things they found out about
others and how this might be different to their
experiences.
T reiterates that our life experiences determine our
identity. Because we are all different we all have a
diverse range of experiences which make us unique and
our culture too.
T begins discussion of the worksheet by
asking some of the following guiding
questions:

found out about someone that you
never knew before?
Have you experienced the same
thing as someone else? How was it
different for you?
How do you think this may have
influenced the way they are today?
T concludes by asking Ss:

What did you learn from this activity
today?
Has this change the way you think of
your classmates?
Ss will be in a sharing circle on
the floor.
T will pick a range of students
and guide discussion.
