Assignment Cover Letter
Student Name: Emmy Bonagofski
Grade: 10
Assignment Title: Student Teaching
Date Assigned: November 22, 2013
Assigning Teacher: Ms. Perez
Priority Standards (write out each standard):
A2.A.APR.1-Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under
the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
A2.A.APR.3-Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a
rough graph of the function defined by the polynomial.
A2.A.SSE.1-Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context. A) Interpret parts of an expression,
such as terms, factors, and coefficients. B) Interpret complicated expressions by viewing one or more of their parts as
a single entity. For example, interpret P(1+r)n as the product of P and a factor not depending on P.
A2.A.SSE.2-Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see x4 - y4 as (x2)2 - (y2)2,
thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (x2 - y2)(x2 + y2).
A2.F.BF.4-Find inverse functions. A) Solve an equation of the form f(x) = c for a simple function f that has an inverse
and write an expression for the inverse. For example, f(x) =2 x3 or f(x) = (x+1)/(x-1) for x ?1. B) (+) Verify by
composition that one function is the inverse of another. C) (+) Read values of an inverse function from a graph or a
table, given that the function has an inverse. D) (+) Produce an invertible function from a non-invertible function by
restricting the domain.
Habits of Mind:
(1) Inquisitiveness
(2) Reflection
(3) Collaboration
(4) Responsibility for Excellence
Student Reflection (Answer each question in complete sentences and in paragraph form).
1. Why did you select this piece? What do you like or not like about this piece of work?
I selected this piece of work because out of everything in Algebra 2, this was the most
challenging assignment. I liked that we were able to make our lesson plan and have control over
what we were doing for the day. It really made me appreciate my teachers a lot more. What I
didn’t like from this assignment was that we had to learn the material ourselves and that was a
little hard.
Why should this sample be included in your portfolio? How does this sample meet the
criteria for selection for your portfolio?
2.
This should be included in my portfolio because it is an example of not only my learning
capabilities but everyone who was in my group. We weren’t taught the material we had to teach.
We were only given what we were going to teach and how to structure the learning plan. It was
a lot of work and really stretched our abilities. This sample meets the criteria because it covers
five power standards, it spanned over two weeks, I used four habits of mind, I also have my
evidence supporting this.
3. What are the strengths of this work? What is one thing you can improve upon in this piece?
My strengths were learning the material on my own, planning the lesson, and executing my part
of it. We had to learn everything on our own. Ms. Perez was there to help us when we needed it.
We also had our text books and any materials online. Planning and teaching the lesson was eye
opening. Before this, I believed that teachers had it easy. They really don’t. It was difficult to
plan the lesson on time and then not yell at the students when they kept talking. I did get over
those hurdles though. The one thing I really wanted to approve upon was my collaboration with
the group and specifically my partner in the group. I didn’t communicate with him and the lesson
quickly took a turn for the worse when he didn’t understand what we were teaching. I wish I
would have communicated with him and taught him what he needed to know. If I had done that,
the assignment would have gone a million times better than it did.
4. What skills can you now perform well as a result of completing this assignment?
I can now confidently plan and teach a lesson. Before doing this I did not have the skills to do
an engaging 90 minute lesson. This has become an important skill to have because we have
had to do this in one other class. This math lesson was more structured than the other one we
had to teach. This lesson also allowed my to get better at being independent in my learning. We
had to learn the materials ourselves and that allowed my to become independent.
5. What did you learn from reviewing this piece?
I learned that it didn’t go as bad as I had thought it did. In the moment, I thought we would have
gotten a one or two. After reflecting upon it, I agree with the grade I did get on it. I also learned
that we need to appreciate our teachers. Their job is a lot more than just teaching and grading.
They don’t have it as easy as we think. They have to plan their lessons, make them engaging,
and not murder us. It really is a lot of work for them.
