Assignment:

Research sites that will provide geographic information on criminal and pedophiles near a)
VMI b) your home, and c) some other location of your choosing.

List the best search sites and explain why.
http://familywatchdog.us/ShowMap.asp?frm=0 is a good site because it shows a map with
squares that tell you offenses against children, rape, sexual battery, and other offenses.
If you click on any of the squares, it shows you a picture of the offender and tells you
what their conviction was. This website also has a list of all the registered sex offenders
and shows statistics of what locations have the most offenders, etc.
fbi.gov/scams-safety/registry is a good site because it shows a list of all 50 states in the
country. When you click on the links for the states it gives you statistics and shows you
the numbers of how many sex offenders are in the state. It also breaks it down into
specific areas to make it more helpful.

Discuss findings for each location.
The first address looked up was in Leesburg, VA.
I noticed that most of the offenders were
concentrated in the highly populated town area
versus the outskirts of the area. I live one block
from two schools, so the nearest offender to my
house was pretty far away. There were 39
offenders in the Leesburg area, which
considering the population, is not too many.
The next address looked up was Lexington, VA
(VMI). We found 70 registered sex offenders in
1
the area. The offenders were focused around the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista. We
noticed that there were four registered offenders within a half mile radius of the high
school in Lexington. We also found out that there were five registered offenders within a
half mile radius of Central Elementary School.
We also looked up New York City. Since it is such a densely populated area, there were sex
offender squares everywhere on the map. Something we found interesting about this map
was that there were so many offenders living very close to all the schools. We thought
that they were not allowed to live in a certain radius of the schools, but in this city it was
different. We found that there were 1700 registered sex offenders in the area and 200
non-mappable offenders.

Are you surprised? Explain.
2
Yes we are surprised mostly by the numbers. We found out that the state with the
highest registered sex offenders per million was Oklahoma, which was surprising because
their population density is not that high. A reason why could be if their sex offender laws
were more lax than other states. We also learned that Texas has the highest number of
registered sex offenders in the entire United States with 77,000 registered offenders.
The state with the lowest amount of registered sex offenders is Minnesota, with 302. It
also has the lowest sex offenders per million, with 60.3. We also looked at the map for
NYC and were very surprised at how dense of a population of sex offenders there were.
You could barely see the land under all of the squares showing offenders.
