Through the NIP Foundation Committee, NIP recognizes excellence in naval and maritime-associated intelligence with its awards and scholarship programs, to include the Rear Admiral Sumner Shapiro scholarship awards. The eligible scholarship candidates are dependent children (under 24 years of age) of regular and reserve Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officer and enlisted intelligence personnel. The Foundation makes awards each year to two broad categories of eligible recipients: Active Duty and Reserve Navy and United States Marine Corps Intelligence Personnel Outstanding instructor at the Navy Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center (NMITC) and the Fleet Intelligence Training Center (FITC) Outstanding students in intelligence and related disciplines at o Intelligence Specialist (IS) “C” School o U.S. Naval Academy o Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course o Naval Postgraduate School o Naval War College o National Defense Intelligence University Junior Intelligence Officers of the Year – Afloat and Ashore Senior and Junior Enlisted CNO Intelligence Specialists of the Year - Afloat and Ashore Senior, Junior and Reserve ONI Sailors of the Year Naval Reserve Intelligence Analyst of the Year Navy League award for exceptional leadership in providing excellence in operational intelligence support to the fleet Naval Institute Naval Intelligence Essay Contest Active duty enlisted personnel (Intelligence Specialists) enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) or parttime in an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program under one of the four named scholarship programs described below These awards (with the exception of the scholarship award described below) provide some or all of the following: official recognition in the Naval Intelligence Professional quarterly newsletter for professional contributions and achievement, free membership in NIP for varying lengths of time, and other types of recognition (e.g., plaques, certificates, etc.) The purpose of all this activity is to encourage and support the Naval Intelligence Professional, and in so doing to preserve the culture and heritage of the Naval Intelligence Profession. For Dependent Children (Under 24 Years of Age) of Regular and Reserve Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Officer and Enlisted Intelligence Personnel and for Enlisted Intelligence Specialists: NIF is pleased to award six named $3000 scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year: Vice Admiral Donald D. Engen Scholarship Captain Richard W. Bates Scholarship Captain George J. O’Donnell, Jr., Scholarship Commander Dan F. Shanower Scholarship Captain (Select) Kurt William Juengling Scholarship Captain Anthony D.Sesow Scholarship Dependent applicants must be eligible for college entrance in the Class of 2016; or already be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited four-year undergraduate college program. The Engen, Bates, O’Donnell, and Shanower Scholarships of $3000 each will all be awarded to dependent children (under 24 years of age) of regular and reserve Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officer and enlisted intelligence personnel. Captain (Select) Kurt William Juengling Scholarship is awarded to dependent children (under 24 years of age) of reserve Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officer and enlisted intelligence personnel will receive preferential consideration for the award of the Juengling Scholarship of $3000. The Captain Anthony D. Sesow Scholarship is awarded to active duty enlisted personnel (Intelligence Specialists). Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) or part-time in an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program. This scholarship may also be shared between two successful candidates. Selection of the scholarship awardees will be based on academic achievement (Grade Point Average), SAT or ACT scores, extra-curricular activities (including community service), and career objectives. These criteria indicate past and potential academic performance and career goals consistent with the NIF charter. Scholarships will be awarded to the best qualified applicants in the dependent and active duty categories, respectively. There is no minimum or maximum length requirement for this essay.
