2012 NCPTW Travel Grants: Call for Applications The National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing is now accepting travel grant applications for the 2012 NCPTW conference in Chicago, Illinois, November 2-4. The application deadline is Tuesday, May 1, 2012 by midnight (same deadline as the conference proposals). Applicants and their sponsors will be notified of the committee’s decisions by Sunday, July 1, 2012 in plenty of time for awardees to decide whether to accept the conference invitation. Grants will be awarded at the conference, and winners will be recognized in the conference program. Overview Individual high school, undergraduate, or graduate student peer tutors who have been accepted for a conference presentation (poster, individual paper, workshop, or other) may apply for any of the grants listed below, provided all qualifications for the grant are met. On the application form, applicants will identify the grant(s) for which they wish to be considered. Tutors may apply for more than one grant, but no more than one grant will be awarded to any individual tutor. Applications will be accepted from individuals only—no group or team applications. Applications that list more than one applicant will not be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered. See below for the list of required materials. Grants NCPTW is offering three categories of grants. The total amount of grant money awarded this year will be $5000. La Beca Grant: up to $500 The Burkean Parlor Grant: up to $500 Registration & Grub Grants: $110 Applicants for La Beca and Burkean Parlor grants will be considered for those grants first, and then, if not selected, will be moved to the applicant pool for the Registration & Grub Grants. Tutors who apply for La Beca or Burkean Parlor Grants need not submit a separate application for an R&G Grant. To clarify, tutors who are eligible for either of the larger grants are encouraged to spend the extra time applying for one or both of those grants, as there is no advantage to applying for an R&G Grant only. La Beca Grant. This grant is intended to support tutors who are contributing in significant ways to writing center pedagogy and theory and are from institutions that are typically underrepresented at NCPTW conferences, including historically black, Hispanic-serving, or tribal colleges and universities; secondary schools and two-year colleges; and schools for the blind or deaf. The grant may also support tutors traveling to the conference from outside the U.S. and tutors from historically underrepresented groups, including LGBTQ tutors, tutors with a disability, and tutors who selfidentify with one or more of the following races/ethnicities: American Indian or Alaskan Native; Asian; Black or African American; Mexican American, Puerto Rican, other Latino/a; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. The purpose of this grant is to facilitate the inclusion of a range of diverse voices and perspectives at our conference, and to support the travel of tutors who might not otherwise be able to attend. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded in this category (lower amounts may be awarded based on the applicant pool and availability of funds). Applicants must indicate their eligibility on the application form to be considered for this grant. The Burkean Parlor Grant. This grant is intended to support tutors who are making significant contributions to the scholarly conversation about peer tutoring, through their daily practices and reflections on that practice; through mentoring and/or administrative duties in their home writing centers; through presentations at conferences or elsewhere; through research and publication; or in other ways. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded in this category (lower amounts may be awarded based on the applicant pool and availability of funds). In their application letters, applicants for The Burkean Parlor Grant must address how they are contributing to the conversation about peer tutoring. Registration & Grub Grants. These smaller grants ($110 each) will cover the cost of registration with a little left over for a nice dinner during the conference. Any tutor accepted to present at the conference may apply for one of these grants, and all non-recipients of La Beca and Burkean Parlor grants will automatically compete for the R&G Grant. Application Process To apply, complete the application form below, including a letter of application for La Beca and Burkean Parlor grants, and e-mail it (MS Word, rich-text format, or PDF) as an attachment to ncptw.travel@gmail.com.
