Humanities Research Centre Transatlantic Fellowship Award Final Report Form APPLICANT DETAILS Name: Gavin Schwartz-Leeper Department: Italian Studies Telephone: 07595740181 Email: g.e.schwartz-leeper@warwick.ac.uk DETAILS OF AWARD Title: ‘The Art of Richard Grafton: The Cultural Impact of a Mid-Tudor Printer’ Brief outline of Research Objectives/Activities and Proposed Outcomes: The purpose of this Fellowship was to support foundational research on a new project on early modern cultures of writing, printing, and reading. This initial fellowship was designed to allow me to produce an application to the Leverhulme Trust based on this project. My objectives were to examine the Newberry’s collection of the printed works of Grafton, Stow, and Tottell alongside the Newberry’s extensive collection of bibliographical reference materials to provide me with a detailed bibliography and plan for research. I also attended the Aldine Quincentennial Symposium on Renaissance print cultures on 6/2/15, which allowed me to develop new approaches to transcultural print networks based on recent research, and to network with a range of international researchers. Timescale: Duration: Two weeks Proposed Start Date: 3/2/15 Proposed End Date: 14/2/15 Actual Start Date: 3/2/15 Actual End Date: 14/2/15 Additional Information: OUTPUTS & OUTCOMES Have the original objectives of the TF Project/Activity been achieved? X Yes (please provide details under the sections below) No (please explain) If applicable, please give details of any collaborations developed as a result of this TF award and any plans to further develop those collaborations: I am organizing a workshop on transcultural print networks and translation (tentatively scheduled for Feb. 2016) which will be co-hosted by Monash University through the International Portal. This event will also benefit from the Alliance Migration, Identity, and Translation Network that I help to run. In addition, I am also working to involve colleagues at the Newberry in this event to build on the connections I made during my Fellowship. If applicable, please give details of specific research outputs, i.e. monographs or papers published, conference presentations given, etc.: Following my Fellowship, I wrote a detailed application to the Leverhulme Trust for a three-year Early Career Fellowship, supported by the CSR. In addition, I am writing up material from the Fellowship for a paper to be given at the proposed workshop (above). Please give any additional information regarding the outcomes from your TF award (e.g. personal/professional development). This Fellowship represented an essential opportunity for me to move into new fields—print history, cultural studies—following my PhD. The support offered by this Fellowship allowed me to move into this new area with confidence and begin work that will help define my career over the coming years.
