pOLyPhoNiCA Recorder Trio
pOLyPhoNiCA is a professional recorder trio, which
gives regular performances throughout the UK and
Europe. The Trio was Ensemble in Residence at the
Cheltenham Recorder Festival from 2008-2013.
pOLyPhoNiCA runs its own Recorder Playing
Weekend at Knuston Hall in March each year.
Each member is an accomplished soloist in his own
right and their collaboration has provided an
opportunity to entertain, teach and develop.
Grace Barton is Director of the Wirral Recorder
Orchestra.
She taught at Birmingham
Conservatoire and for many years conducted
ensembles at Alston Hall. She now tutors at various
day and residential courses and she is a regular
visiting tutor at Bingley SRP. Grace gives Advanced
Recorder Workshops and private music tuition in
Birkenhead.
Michael Piraner taught recorder at Newcastle
University
Conservatorium
of
Music
in
Australia. He has given numerous workshops in
Australia and the U.K. and runs Advanced Recorder
Workshops and teaches privately in Brighton.
Michael is currently researching historical recorder
techniques and methods of interpretation.
Simone Reid led the annual Recorder weekends
and Recorder and Strings weekends at Knuston Hall
and is a guest conductor for the Northampton
Recorder Group and Nene Consort. Simone has
regular links with Poland where she has tutored
recorder courses and workshops and has given
lectures. She leads a number of school recorder
ensembles across Northamptonshire.

The day includes…
Technique sessions:
Warm up: This will warm up players for the day and
give tips on how to begin practice sessions and
improve ensemble playing.
Technique session: This practical workshop will let
you practise ways of using alternative fingerings to
keep your pitch accurate: useful for dynamics and
of course, general tuning.
Playing sessions:
Smaller Ensembles: Working in three smaller
groups, (beginner, intermediate and advanced –
you choose) you will be coached by a member of
pOLyPhoNiCA. At the end of the sessions, the
groups will perform to each other!
Massed Playing: We will begin and end the day all
playing together.
Recital: Relax after your lunch while pOLyPhoNiCA
perform a selection of recorder trio music for your
delectation and delight!
Lunch arrangements: Tea and coffee will be
provided. Please bring a packed lunch or make use
of one of the many eating establishments in
Claughton Village.
All music is provided. Please bring a music stand.
Music will cater for descant, treble, tenor and bass
recorders and larger bass instruments will be most
welcome in the massed playing sessions.
Treble recorders are preferred for the
technique session.
