SECTION I: Leadership and Ethics (L&E) Pillars Course Proposals

Please insert your responses to the four items (a-d) below.
a. While an L&E pillars course will have outcomes relevant to its specific content
area, it must include outcomes addressing demonstration of understanding
leadership and ethics or ethical leadership. List the learning outcomes for your
course.
b. An L&E pillars course must provide a rich context for understanding the subtleties in
leadership and ethics or ethical leadership. Case studies or other deeply contextualized
instructional methods may provide for this. Describe course assignments that will
develop and measure competencies relevant to the stated leadership and ethics or
ethical leadership learning outcomes.
c. An L&E course must include the assignment of two short essays, each responding
to a hypothetical situation provided by the instructor:
Leadership Essay: In a short essay of 300-500 words, analyze the hypothetical leadership
problem provided, explain the challenges involved, and propose a solution.
Ethics Essay: In a short essay of 300-500 words, analyze the hypothetical ethical dilemma
provided and propose a solution.
Describe how the required essays will be assigned in the course.
d. An L&E pillars course must have a grading plan that assures the grades earned on
the assignment(s) relevant to leadership and ethics or ethical leadership comprise a

significant percentage of the final grade. Describe how the relevant assignments of
this course contribute to the student’s final grade.
SECTION II: Diversity and Community Engagement (D&CE) Pillars Course Proposals
(Note: “diversity” is understood as any aspect of human diversity, and “community” is
understood on a continuum anywhere from local or global).

students in a community-based project related to diversity. Describe course
assignments that will develop and measure competencies relevant to the stated
diversity and community engagement learning outcomes.
c. A D&CE pillars course must include the assignment of two short essays:
Diversity Essay: In a short essay of 300-500 words, describe the manifestation of human diversity
explored in this course, and discuss what you feel are the most important understandings related
to diversity that you learned, explaining their significance in relation to the issue.
Community Engagement Essay: In a short essay of 300-500 words, describe the community
engagement activity enabled by this course, and discuss insights related to diversity understand
that the experience provided you personally, conclude by identifying what you feel will be your
most lasting impression from the experience.
Describe how the required essays will be assigned in the course.
d. A D&CE pillars course must have a grading plan that assures the grades earned on
the assignment(s) relevant to diversity and community engagement comprise a
significant percentage of the final grade. Describe how the relevant assignments of
this course contribute to the student’s final grade.
