Michael spoke to the group about the changing terms of reference in light of the merging of the collection
and information services groups
Sarah suggested that Michael alert librarians about the merger and encourage people to come along

Kylie gave a stimulating presentation on marketing in public libraries which focused on changing
established attitudes to both our services and those who use these services. Drawing on a book shop
model she had created themed spaces where library “customers” could comfortably browse. Kylie also
spoke about the role of Lib Mark and the possibility of both working more closely with the Collections SIG

Mary’s gave a fascinating talk that drew on her many years of experience in book sales. She noted that
whilst there had been many changes in book selling the intention to put books in the hands of avid readers

had remained the same. She stressed the need for staff to know their collections, the importance of
people being both visible and readily available to help people, and the importance of staff being actively
engaged in reading so as to provide a personalized approach. For Mary the book shop offered a sense of
place and contributed to the creation of a “book culture”. She saw her marketing brief as focusing on
people and connecting with them.

Monash – RFID is being set up, Walking away from concerns over locked cases and AV security as they
use donut tags
Bayside – weeding of fiction and identifying reasons for stock not moving, shift to face out picture book
shelving that had resulted in a rise in stats
Greater Dandenong – Collection HQ training And installation of RFID book sorter.
Hobson’s Bay – New manager and introduction of Collection HQ.
Central Highlands – have set up a Good reads account and encouraged staff to discuss specific titles
Latrobe – adding Zinio, and revamping Moreland and Tarralgon
Mornington – developed an email newsletter
Casey Cardinia – Reloading Bolinda files to avoid duplication of records as a result of renewed some titles
and not others
Wyndham – opening a fifth branch at Tarneet at the end of the year and the creation of a position with
marketing responsibilities.
West Gippsland – running e-book training
