8. Justification for proposal:
The Arizona Department of Education requires a course in linguistics for both the ESL and the
Bilingual Endorsements. To this point, the only linguistics course geared toward PK-12
teachers is the BME 538. As any course at the graduate level, it expects some skills and
knowledge that are above the regular undergraduate student level. BME 438, co-convened
with BME 538, expects to meet the need of a linguistics course for PK-12 teacher candidates
at the undergraduate level.
