Round Hill Community Church ORDER OF SERVICE December 27, 2015 First Sunday after Christmas PRELUDE O Hail This Brightest Day of Days J.S. Bach WORDS OF WELCOME INTROIT CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Some people say that Christmas is for children. All: Christmas is also for people of age and experience. Leader: Elizabeth, Mary's cousin, and Zechariah, the priest, accepted new birth breaking into all their familiar patterns. All: Simeon the singer and Anna the prophet hoped for many years to see the Messiah and then recognized the Messiah in a poor couple's baby. Leader: How then shall we respond to Christ's promised coming? All: With willingness for change, with patience in long waiting, with silence and singing, with the ability to see Christ in the least likely of our brothers and sisters. *HYMN No. 143 Joy to the World *The congregation is invited to stand *OPENING PRAYER Gracious God, we have sought you in high and holy places; we are illprepaid to acknowledge your presence among the lowly and poor. We believe you are profound but we overlook your obvious truths. We are anxious about the unknown but we hardly consider the realities immediately in front of us. Turn us, incarnate God, by the simple wonders of your love, to a rebirth of faith and hope and joy. Amen *THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Children may now leave for Church School. ANTHEM What Sweeter Music Linda Seaver Fink SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 2: 25-40 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed— and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. SERMON What Are We Waiting For? *HYMN No. 170 How Great Our Joy The Rev. Purify our hearts, strengthen our minds and bodies, fill us with Christian love. Let no pride, no self-conceit, no rivalry, no illwill ever spring up among us. Make us earnest and true, wise and prudent, giving no just cause for offense; and may thy holy peace rest upon us this day and every day throughout the coming week, sweetening our trials, cheering us in our work, and keeping us faithful to the end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION AND CHORAL RESPONSE POSTLUDE Noel Dacquin ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT We, the members of the Round Hill Community Church, a selfgoverning, non-denominational body, seek to foster a community of faith where people of all ages and backgrounds pursue spiritual growth; where God is worshipped in Word and praised in music; where friends are made and hurts are healed. We seek to be a community where individuals commit their time and resources to education, fellowship, and to helping those in need among our Church family and in the broader world. We are a church where faith, hope, justice and love are valued, and above all, Jesus is Lord. ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH CREED I believe in God, the one universal Father of all mankind, revealed supremely in Jesus Christ, our Lord, and present with us to guide, comfort and inspire in the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Kingdom of God; and in the mission of the Christian Church to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, exalting the worship of the Lord our God, and laboring for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of righteousness, the reign of peace, and the realization of human brotherhood. United in Christian love, we pray and labor for the coming of the Kingdom, the triumph of righteousness and the life everlasting. Amen. REFLECTIONS It is Christmas every time you let God love others through you...yes, it is Christmas every time you smile at your brother and offer him your hand. -Mother Teresa It's hard to beat the system when we're standing at a distance. So we keep waiting, waiting on the world to change. Now if we had the power to bring our neighbors home from war, they would have never missed a Christmas, no more ribbons on their door. And when you trust your television, what you get is what you got, cause when they own the information, oh they can bend it all they want. That's why we're waiting, waiting on the world to change. We keep on waiting, waiting on the world to change. -John Mayer Cover Art: “Simeon and Anna Recognize the Lord in Jesus”, c. 1627, Rembrandt Senior Pastor: The Rev. Dr. Edward G.
