Sunday 1/12/2014 Intermediate Group #2 9 am Rich Whittecar: Brief presentation on UTeach program. Started at UT about 15 years ago. Successful program. Q&A: William Holt: Capacity of K-12 system to absorb students. Tim Bralower: Fort Valley. Mr. Crumley. 31 years Historically black college in Georgia. Since 1983. Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP). Has established national network of high schools. Recruit 7th-8th grade students to join in 9th grade. Minority students (African American, native American, Hispanic). Students attend Fort Valley, do degree in 3 years. Choice of programs: UNLV, UT Austin, etc. Fields: Engineering, Science. Use of internships: USGS, EPA. Long-term personal connections. Alums have positions in high places. Annual meeting of alums and current students. Pipeline. Funding is major preoccupation: Shell, Chevron are major contributors. Struggle, do not have endowment. Scholarships. Successful small program, expensive. Go over slides of Group 3 and Group 4 Broader impacts: direct/indirect they are in the eye of the beholder/reviewer Some researchers do no broader impacts and get by with it. “Career” award “broader” means larger than education & outreach. Requires hookup with science education expert. JS: Good to tell NSF to encourage broader impacts. Need to do something meaningful. Using “broader impacts” in NSF is part of action plan. NSF Rep (name unknown): Reviewers are very critical of proposals. Shift: federal funding changes. Funding is difficult. Broader impact plan can get a proposal funded, other things being equal. Advice: Beef up “broader impacts.” Justin is doing data mining. Other staff providing model for these categories. WH: What support do national/state agencies provide for its employees to spend some percentage of work time in STEM programs? BH: Depends on how faculty time is mandated. How service is evaluated. GK: Look at broader educational framework. In future, students will only have to have 1 lab course. Will be bringing in other topics: course on Eastern Studies is actually Geo 101 on China. Geoscience can do this.
