Walloon companies doing 574.8 km an hour!
With the TGV high-speed train recently beating its own record by notching up a
breakneck speed of 574.8 km an hour, Wallonia takes pride in its role as the starting
blocks of the race towards mobility. After all, a Walloon company helped to make this feat
possible by supplying the material for the new generation electronic control system on
board the V150 as well as two auxiliary power converters. A symbolic victory for an
industry at the cutting edge of progress!
Criss-crossing the enlarged Europe in all directions using land transport is, without a
doubt, one of the major axes of European development. In a world where there is no
stopping progress and where everything has to take place in real time, a lot is at stake.
Passenger and goods transport and, consequently, the communication infrastructures,
are mapping out our economic future. Wallonia has always been well aware of this. It has
not only set up one of the densest road and railway networks in Europe but has also
succeeded, for over a century, in exporting its competencies throughout the world.
As far back as 100 years ago…
Walloon engineers already enjoy an international reputation. One of the most familiar
names is Edouard Frankignoul, the world-famous inventor of the Franki piles, a
foundation system patented in 1909. A high-flying entrepreneur, he was to rise to the
head of a group based in Belgium and operating several foreign subsidiaries employing a
workforce of over 5000. To illustrate their success, the Franki piles support San
Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and the port of Amsterdam no less.
A symbol of the capitalist adventure, Edouard Empain built up his empire in the
construction and operation of secondary railways and the introduction of electric
traction in urban transport in Belgium and in France. He also contributed to the
emergence of one of the major electrical groups. The son of a primary school teacher,
the strong personality of this autodidact was also put at the service of the companies run
by King Léopold II abroad, always in the fields of transport and electricity (China, Egypt,
Russia and Congo).
Etienne Lenoir, for his part, carried out endless experiments and filed for numerous
patents in enamelling, electrolysis and glass silvering techniques and in train braking
and signalling systems. But, among the many inventions of Etienne Lenoir, the most
remarkable is the internal combustion engine.
Inspired by the American model, Georges Nagelmackers created the “Compagnie
internationale des Wagons-Lits”, for Walloon companies and industrialists required to
travel throughout Europe. Synonymous with comfort and luxury, the “blue trains”
travelled the length and breadth of Europe, Asia and Africa.
Taking the skills into the future
As we have said, today Walloon companies are participating in the major rail and
highway construction projects. Component manufacturers recognised for their knowhow and professionalism, they propose a broad spectrum of products ranging from the
design, manufacture and maintenance of complete rail transportation system to the
design and realisation of railway structures and civil engineering, as well as the
manufacture of high security ticket barriers with fast opening and wicket gates. Others
specialise in the production of metallic lifting, traction and stowing cables, of urban
lamps, of motorway signal gantries or even the construction of bridges, roads and
tracks, the design and manufacture of acoustic protection devices and equipment for
structures with a high architectural value and buildings (stations, offices).
Electronics are also an area of Walloon expertise, encompassing data merger
technologies for secure navigation, a software suite for the automatic management and
running of warehouses, designed especially for the transport and storage sector, and
intelligent video surveillance techniques: traffic analysis, detection of specific events
(traffics jams, dangerous behaviour), statistics and classification concerning road
traffic…
As far as services are concerned, Walloon companies specialising in the sale of new or
refurbished railway material or studies into railway carriages operate world-wide.
Aware of the wealth of its know-how, underpinned by far-reaching experience and
advanced technical knowledge, Wallonia is looking to the future by supporting research
and development. Many companies have in-house R&D departments that are already
drawing up the blueprints of tomorrow’s mobility. For example, it took 14 months to
design and to conduct trials and tests on the trains that allowed the TGV to smash its
speed record.
You see, wherever you are in the world, you are almost certain to pass through a gate
manufactured in Wallonia, to use underground or railway trains made using Walloon
know-how or to be kept safe by a video surveillance network made in Walloon. Have a
good journey!

Design Office
Our mission is to put our imagination, experience, and skills to work on projects,
regardless of size.
Our main job, therefore, is to listen to our clients: to keep their current (and future)
needs, wishes, and dreams in mind, and to work within the means at their disposal to
design legitimate architecture adapted to suit these requirements.
A structure of quality is defined by its ability to harmoniously incorporate and
accommodate all constraints involved in its construction.
We are the cornerstone — the think tank that makes this possible by coordinating all of
the thought processes that lead to the production of a tangible project.
Quality assurance
The quality of the service we provide is deeply rooted in our concern for the constant
improvement of methods and communication at every level of the team in charge of a
project.

Group MENDES - (GMM) - is a group of SME-VSE businesses distributed throughout
Europe whose industrial activities are mainly in Belgium.
A highly specialized staff and constantly updated machinery guarantee optimal service.
MENDES group
In 1995, Gabriel MENDES, the founder of MENDES Group, worked as a project manager
in the glass machinery business in the region of La Louvière, in Belgium.
He decided to buy one of the business activities of ACEC (Ateliers de Constructions
Electriques de Charleroi) in Marcinelle (a city in the Charleroi region of Belgium).
Gradually his shrewd mechanical and business acumen led him to invest in precision
engineering in the Charleroi region, and then recently in the Brabant Wallon Region.
Today the Mendes Group (GMG) has no fewer than twenty companies, SME-VSE,
throughout several European countries in areas which are as diverse as they are
promising.
Unknown outside of its regional sphere, MENDES Group’s more recent ambition is to
share its expertise with new subscribers and excel not only in the Benelux region but in
the EU and Switzerland as well.
Its core business in Belgium is mainly focused on precision engineering,
electromechanical relays and high precision welding, the latter being complementary, to
ensure a range of services in areas as diverse as the aeronautics, pharmaceutical, steel,
foundry, and railway industries etc.
Here is a glimpse of our areas of interest:
The flagship of the group, ATVE is located in the heart of the industrial
activities of Charleroi and has several major advantages including proximity to major
primary contractors to say the least.
Its initial modest activity has intensified in recent years by the hiring of highly qualified
technicians and the purchasing of new equipment.
ATVE S.A. Signalling is an SME of around twenty people that
specializes in the production and renovation of electromechanical relays for railways,
subways, trams, nuclear power plants, the steel industry, the cement industry and the
list goes on...
Having found its market "niche", the company is constantly seeking new solutions for its
customers. The accuracy of the settings, the strict controls and the expertise of its
operators puts ATVE Signalling in a unique and reliable partnership with Belgium for
safety relays.
One of the latest remarkable acquisitions of the Group is
Dascotte, located in Nivelles, the nerve center of Brabant Wallon.
This workshop of fine machinery perfectly complements the activities of ATVE in
Charleroi while keeping its technical and commercial specificity.
Being the initial business of what is now the Mendes Group, LM
DUFOURCO is in many ways a reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder.
Originally a small unassuming workshop, its range of possibilities has grown over the
years. Hence, in 2011, LM DUFOURCO can offer its customers a whole range of surface
treatments and sub-contracting: the design of electroplating kits for repairing
infrastructures of high-speed trains through the electrolytic plating, heat-shrink sleeving,
zinc white, chroming, black oxidation, micro blasting, copper plating, nickel plating, etc..
All this is done with a thoroughness of craftsmanship and combined with the industrial
strength of the group. Their attention to detail and their regard for perfection are what
best characterizes the human-sized company firmly.
MALU is in some ways the internal "Service Center" of the group. A TPE
in the center of the axis of other activities of interest in Charleroi, MALU guarantees intragroup outsourcing which provides services for the operation of the other companies.
MALU may also, where appropriate, ensure the development, assembly, disassembly,
startup, maintenance of various infrastructures and thereby externalize its activities on
behalf of third parties. It is an essential link that ensures the smooth running of activities.
Established in 2004 by the late Jean-Pierre Paulus, TechWelding was purchased in July 2010 by the Mendes Group following the sudden death of
its founder.
It was already a sub-contractor of the Group in previous years and its activity is
deliberately oriented towards high technology. Microwelding (Micro TIG., Micro Plasma,
Micro Laser) is now demanded in various ways to fields as diverse as the aerospace
industry, the pharmaceutical industry, foundries, precision engineering, the railway
industry, industrial filters and so on.
Equipped with a machine park on the cutting edge and under perpetual technical
renovation as well as with highly qualified welders, this SME is rapidly growing.

G-Tec has a long experience in civil engineering and infrastructures related projects
such as HST, waterways, bridges, roads, tunnels...
The understanding of the geology and its influence on the design of the project is a
condition for successful completion of each project step.
G-Tec has the knowledge to plan and supervise geotechnical campaigns, to carry out
geophysical campaigns and to organize fully integrated site investigations on land and
water.
Considering that there is not always a 100% solution for getting a clear view of the
expected geological situations, choosing the right combination of geophysical and
geotechnical tools is a matter of knowledge and experience and of gathering as much
background info as possible.

has become the partner of choice of more than 5,000 manufacturing companies
worldwide. LMS operates in over 30 key locations around the world.
Rail & Train
Public transport is a key element in the mobility of communities. However this type of
transport can be a source of vibrations and might therefore be seen as a potential threat
to the surrounding infrastructure. Functional reliability of the systems is a major
operational concern. Also the pass-by-noise of trains is a recurring constraint, certainly
in cities with dense population. Another tendency is set with soaring oil prices and
increasing pollution. Governments and transportation authorities put more effort to
explore alternative options like electrical propulsion.
Whether it concerns trains, trams, metro, subway, underground, light rail or monorail,
LMS offers test and mechatronic solutions for NVH engineering, durability, thermal and
energy management, dynamics, controls development and much more. LMS supports
transportation authorities to carry people and freight cheaper, faster, quieter and
cleaner.

High-performance trains need efficient infrastructure
Rail transportation is very dependent on the quality of the infrastructure that supports it,
and that includes cables and cabling systems for telecommunications and energy.
Modern high-speed trains demand cables with different characteristics in terms of
bandwidth, safety, electromagnetic immunity and resistance.
A definite trend is interoperability, which allows trains to move easily across borders and
even continents. Here, too, cables must comply with the new consolidated ERTMS/ETCS
standards which are progressively integrating GSM-R radio technologies for train
control, while continuing to rely on older route control systems (relay interlocking) for
safety and redundancy.
Indeed, safety has become a prime concern for the world’s rail operators, and there is a
demand not only for more reliable operating systems, but also for materials with
improved fire-performance characteristics, especially in tunnels, stations and public
areas. Urban mass transit, subways, fully-automated metros, light rail suburban lines and
trams are experiencing substantial growth, especially in Asia. Each rail mode has its own
cable needs.
What railway operators expect of a cable manufacturer







Range of high-quality cables from one supplier
Mastery of energy, data and radio-based technologies
Installation for mainline, mass transit, tunnels, right-of-ways, etc.
Enhanced fire performance for public and infrastructure safety
Interoperability, open standards, and worldwide compliance
Cable efficiency, compactness, lightness, and resistance
Low costs, minimum maintenance, easy upgrades
To answer these challenges, NEXANS provides a complete range of cables and
accessories for all of your railway networks projects.

RA Luxury Trains
Supported by experienced railway and hotel architects, RA Concept has designed a new
concept of luxury trains and proposes the construction and further operation of an
exclusive 5-star “Boutique Luxury Train”. It distinguishes itself from existing initiatives
through its unprecedented and unequalled design, its elevated level of comfort and
service which addresses today’s customer expectations.
It combines unique characteristics such as:
•
•
•
Elegance, stylish interior architecture and sumptuous design;
Exclusivity and customized services;
Unprecedented comfort in overnight surface transportation;
The company applies a turnkey approach and commits to deliver to an investment
consortium a complete train set in full compliance with the technical, operational and
safety regulations of the host railway. RA Concept is responsible for the development
phase that includes the business plan, the conclusion of service contracts and operating
agreement with the host railway operator, the project financing and further set up and
incorporation of a local investment company.
RA Concept is also globally responsible for the production phase through various
partnerships for the production of the interior modules (Belgium), the shells (host
country) and the assembly and finishing (host country). RA concept will subsequently
support the financial risk of the industrial process up to final delivery.
Besides the production of luxury trains, RA Concept plans to lead invest in the
investment consortium so as to keep control on the quality of the operation.
RA Innovations
« Keeping the Technology on Board”
RA Concept engineers have a passion for railways.
RA Concept has always been interested in new technologies.
These two components are the driving force behind “RA Innovations”.
We specialized ourselves in « ICT » (Information and Communication Technology), in
collaboration with VECTURIS for the functional and organizational aspects of the
«railway business».
Starting in the early nineties, we applied our new ideas to operational management of
vehicle fleets. More specifically we focused on the improvement of railway operations in
the field, with centralized software solutions.
More recently with the “exploding” availability of onboard technologies, RA Innovation
has embarked in several initiatives aiming at putting advanced onboard logic on vehicles,
wagons and locos. The objective is still to reduce operational costs but under new angles
of “attack”.
With this in mind we have straighten our traditional cooperation with VECTURIS which
started new railway concessions to manage the operations of several African railways.
This cooperation provides RA Concept with an ideal workbench for implementing its
news products.
Other partners will soon be joining our projects: research centers, university
laboratories, small enterprises specialized in onboard technology, etc.

REPROCOVER RECYCLING PRODUCT COVERS
Route de Charlemagne, 69
4841 HENRI-CHAPELLE
Tel: 32-(0)87340437 - Fax: 32-(0)87352815 – Mobile: 32-(0)474975743
Email: reprocov@scarlet.be - Web: www.reprocover.com
Contact person: Mr Peter JUNIUS
The Belgium based company REPROCOVER has developed, after several years of R&D, a
unique recycling process, that enables it to turn waste of (composite) thermosetting
plastics, such as polyesters, Bakelite, epoxy, polyurethane..., and waste of fibreglass
into a new raw material.
Production process (patent protection applied for)
In its factory in Henri-Chapelle (Welkenraedt), REPROCOVER developed and installed a
recycling line, allowing to break, grind and sieve non-thermoplastic (composite)
industrial waste into small granules having a diameter of maximum 6mm.
A similar recycling process is carried out on fibreglass waste. Eventually, both
substances are completely dried out and mixed with each other in a ratio of approx. 30%
of glass fibre flakes.
This "new raw material" is subsequently mixed with polyole and isocianate and poured
out and pressed in product moulds under 200 ton presses, triggering off a chemical
reaction (cold pressure process).
Main characteristics of the REPROCOVER products
As all of our products are based on thermosetting (composite) waste, the main
characteristics of these are also to be found in our finished products:





Extreme hardness (Shore D = 75)
Resistant to high pressure loads
Shock proof
Temperature resistance (-70 up to +350°C)
Rustproof








Low weight (specific gravity of 1.3kg/dm³)
Extremely anti-skid (especially when wet, test results of 90 cq 81 points (above 65
= extremely low slip potential))
Resistant to salt, petrol products and chemical detergents
Maintenance free
UV resistance
Good fire resistance
Price/quality ratio
Worthless to thieves, unlike substitute products made of cast iron or
thermoplastics
Last but not least the product waste of REPROCOVER's own production is on its turn
100% recycled or reused (recycling dust sold as a concrete additive), based on the
"cradle to cradle" principle thus illustrating the "sustainability" of the products.
A new application in our recycled non thermosetting composite waste saw the light, the
bi-block railway sleeper. Extremely strong, light, resistant to extreme temperatures,
universal, vibrations absorbing, price/quality very interesting, etc… This railway sleeper
is currently being presented to the European railway companies for further detailed
testing to confirm if it will be able to replace the wooden railway sleeper. Last but not
least, this railway sleeper would substantially contribute to the reduction of the massive
thermosetting composite waste volumes.

RUBBERGREEN is the specialist of composite rubber and is active in the design and
manufacture of high value-added solutions based on recycled rubber. Our areas of
interventions are mainly in the following sectors: construction & building, railway,
industry, dairy & equestrian industry. In addition to a full range of standard products, the
vast majority of which is available in our stock, RUBBERGREEN also develops bespoke
solutions for its customers.
RUBBERGREEN as a manufacturer conducts its operations mainly 'business to business'
and has an extensive network of distributors, partners in different sectors and countries
in which the company operates. The company was founded in 2009 RUBBERGREEN in
Belgium and has a modern and competitive production center ideally located in the
center of Western Europe. RUBBERGREEN recycles more than 1,000 tons per year of
high quality rubber.
The management team of the Company RUBBERGREEN totals more than 25 years of
experience in relevant areas in which the Company operates.
Values/Vision
RUBERGREEN values immensely the relationship with its customers, partners and
suppliers. In this spirit, RUBBERGREEN always aims to:


deliver a solution tailored to the requirements of its customers at the right price;
work in close collaboration and trust with its customers and partners.
Recycling (green credentials) is also at the heart of RUBBERGREEN which, through the
creation of performant technical products, gives a second life to rubber waste otherwise
destined for destruction or burial.
RUBBERGREEN aims to become a major European and international player in the
recycling of rubber, constantly improving the quality and technical solutions developed
from composite rubber.
Railways
Whether we are talking about trams and metros in a typical urban area or conventional
trains or even high-speed rail, each railway project raises specific issues in terms of
vibration and acoustics. Thanks to its experience of composite rubber and serious
investments made in this sector (R&D), RUBBERGREEN has developed a range of
products to be installed under railway tracks that significantly improve the acoustic
performance of rails in urban area and reduces also the maintenance costs of the ballast,
often damaged by the "wheel-rail" interaction dynamics.
The continuous traffic of trains, trams and subways is a source of many vibrations,
whose effects are transmitted through the whole structure of the way - rail, saddle
crosses and ballasts - into sub-layers of the surrounding soil. It is therefore crucial to be
able to isolate the railway track, whether to improve the comfort of the residents, or
extend the life of various components of the railway track - from the track to the ballast.
The structure of the mats produced by RUBBERGREEN combines highly resilient rubber
in a dimple profiling, which provides unique performance in static stiffness (kstat) and
dynamic (Kdyn) with thinner thicknesses than the one of competing products.

International Marketing Unit
The mission of the International Marketing Unit of the UWE (Walloon Business
Federation) is to boost Wallonia's foreign trade by bringing together providers of goods
and services operating in the same field of activity (clusters). The action is supported by
a leading company in the chosen sector (sponsor).
Advantages of our methodology :



For Walloon companies, which are generally recommended by the sponsors, the
Unit helps to increase turnover via new export markets. The Unit's approach
creates a technologically enabling corporate environment, paving the way to
outlets that would normally be inaccessible to companies on their own.
For foreign buyers, the Unit's operations seek to diversify their suppliers, improve
their sourcing opportunities and discover new technological options.
For sponsors, the Unit is committed to preserving their image in Belgium and
abroad, while helping to place their suppliers on a more stable footing, lending
support in increasing turnover and fine-tuning quality in the light of international
benchmarks.
Since its creation, the International Marketing Unit has developed 17 clusters and is
continuing to add new ones. It has carried out 157 missions in 49 countries, with an
average of eight companies per mission.
