Request for Fellowship Proposals

Purpose:
The Stanford Institute for Chemical Biology (SICB) is soliciting fellowship proposals from
physician-scientists in training at Stanford or the Palo Alto VA who are currently in the
research phase of their fellowship and have not yet secured a K08 Award.
The ideal candidate(s) would be someone who has a chemical background, is planning
on a career based on laboratory investigation, and who wishes to incorporate a
chemical component into their current and future biomedical research. Examples of
areas of interest include, but are not limited to, exploration of structure-activity
relationships of bioactive lead molecules; development of new chemical tools for
physiological or pathological processes; and development of biomedically relevant
physical or chemical assays.
Successful proposals will be deemed most likely to lead to a successful K08 award.
Amount of funding: Each fellowship will provide $60K in direct cost funding for a oneyear period, with the possibility of an additional year of support based on research
progress and programmatic need. Funds are primarily intended for salary support, but a
portion of the funds may also be used for other purposes, subject to SICB approval. If a
K08 award is received during the term of the fellowship, the SICB will work with the
fellow to reconfigure the remaining fellowship award so as to be compatible with the
terms of the K08.
Eligibility: The clinical fellow must be in the research phase of his/her fellowship.
He/she must not yet have secured a K08 or similar career development award.
Internal Proposal Guidelines
By Jan 31, 2014, please submit one PDF file containing the following to Carolynn Beer
at cbeer@stanford.edu.
1) Title page:
-Name of this RFA: SICB Physician-Scientist Fellowship
-Project title:
-Fellow and mentor names, appointments, department, address, phone, email
2) Proposal:
There is no specific format for proposals, but a successful proposal should explain the
background and aims of the project and include preliminary data, if any. The text should
not exceed 3 pages including figures (single space, Arial font, 11 point), but excluding
references.
3) Biosketches: Include NIH-format biosketches of the clinical fellow and mentor(s).
4) Personal Statement: Outline career plans and how chemical biology is expected to
be a significant component of the applicant’s research career. Describe plans for
developing a successful K08 application. Not to exceed 1 page.
5) Budget: Describe the proposed use of fellowship funds (if any funding is required for
purposes other than salary and benefits).
Selection Process:
Submitted proposals will be peer-reviewed by a panel of the Institute for Chemical
Biology.
