Miss Folkerth & Mrs. Bell 5th Grade Math November Unit #3 Vocabulary Variable Algebraic Expression Order of Operations Corresponding Sequence Terms Equivalent Fractions Simplest Form Benchmark Fraction Common Multiple Least Common Multiple Common Denominator Least Common Denominator Clusters Covered Write and interpret numerical expressions Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. 5th Grade Common Core Standards Covered: 5.OA.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions and evaluate expressions with these symbols. 5.0A.2 Write simple expression that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expression without evaluating them. 5.0A.3 Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. 5.NF.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixednumbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions insuch a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractionswith like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.) 5.NF.2 Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators,e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent theproblem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractionsto estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2. Critical Questions: How can you write an algebraic expression? How can you evaluate a numerical expressions containing more than one operation? What order should you use when you simplify an expression? How can you use the order of operations to evaluate expressions with decimals? How can you find a rule and write an addition and subtraction expression? How can you find a rule and write a multiplication and division expression? How can you find the relationship between two sequences? How can you translate words into expressions? How can you find equivalent fractions? How can you write a fraction in simplest form? How do you write a math explanation? How can you estimate the sum or difference of two fractions? How can you find common multiples of two numbers? How can you find common denominators for fractions with unlike denominators? How can you add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators? Assessments: Students will participate in class activities, complete homework, participate in class discussions, take pre and post assessments to determine growth. Dear Parents & Guardians, During the month of November we will be working on the above unit in math class and continue working with fractions during the month of December. We will focus on becoming proficient in the standards listed above. Each unit will begin with a pre assessment and end with a post assessment to illustrate growth.
