Stockham Family Funeral Home L ois Gertrude Lackey Hayes, 100, of McPherson, passed peacefully into eternal life Friday, January 20, 2012, at The Cedars in McPherson. She was a homemaker and served as the Secretary for the McPherson Church of the Brethren and of the Brethren Church District Office. She was born December 1, 1911, in Vale, Oregon, the second daughter of Clinton Milo and Agnes May (Law) Lackey. Lois graduated from high school in Fruitland, Idaho and attended McPherson College, where she also served as Secretary to the College President. She had been a McPherson resident since 1942, having lived in Ellsworth and Chapman. On December 29, 1935, in Fruitland, she married Harrison Guy Hayes, of Genesco, KS. Lois was a staunch supporter of Guy's work with the McPherson Kiwanis Club as well as his other community volunteering. Lois was a Thursday morning volunteer at Save N’ Share for many years. She also participated in many women's clubs in McPherson. Together they were active members of the McPherson Church of the Brethren for over seventy years. They traveled extensively in Europe, Australia and New Zealand and all 50 United States. Lois and Guy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before his death March 26, 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Agnes; husband Guy; a son, Dr. Larry Hayes; two brothers, Harold and Donald Lackey; and a sister, Wanda Lackey. December 1, 2011, her 100th Birthday was celebrated with an Ice Cream Sundae Party at The Cedars. 100+ family and friends gathered to wish her well and share the fellowship. Guests enjoyed a 100-year-timeline and many photos of Lois' long life. That occasion was documented by an article in The Senior News of The Sentinel, December 16, 2011. Survivors include a daughter, Gail Roe (Nick) of Houston, TX; a sister, Floy LaScala of Santa Monica, CA; seven grandchildren, Mark Hayes, Evergreen, CO, Michelle Harrison (Tim), Conifer, CO, Michael Hayes, Littleton, CO, Cecile Boston (Mike), San Jose, CA, Amanda Whitstone (Nick), San Jose, CA, Nathaniel Roe (continued on back) and Christopher Roe, both of Houston, TX; eight greatgrandchildren, Dru Harrison, Highland, IN, Erika Harrison, Greeley, CO, Micaela and Madelin Hayes, Kansas City, KS, Jack and Max Boston and Will and Joe Whitstone, all of San Jose, CA. She is also remembered by many nieces, nephews and their families. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Cedars (especially the nurses and aides), Hospice Care of Kansas and Dr. Peter DeWitt for their care. Longtime friends and family brightened her days right to the end. PSALM TWENTY-THREE The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
