Coordinate Plane and Slopes - Notes Day 1
Name_____________________
Learning Targets: Students will be able to identify the parts of the coordinate plane and graph ordered
pairs. Students will be able to find rate of change and identify different types of slopes and find the slope
given two coordinate points using the slope formula.
Warm Up:
1) Label all the parts of the coordinate plane below. Can you identify the x-axis, the y-axis, the origin, and
each quadrant?
2) Use the coordinate plane above to plot the following points.
Identify which quadrant contains each point
A (3, 4)
B (0, 5)
C (-3, -7)
D (-4, 5)
E (-4, 0)
F (1, -2)
Coordinate Plane: Two perpendicular number lines called the x axis (horizontal) and y axis (vertical number line).
x coordinate: the first number in an ordered pair
y coordinate: the second number in an ordered pair (x, y)
Origin: The intersection of the x and y axis.
The ordered pair is (0, 0).
Quadrants: The x axis and y axis separate the coordinate
plane into four regions (rotate counter-clockwise).
SLOPE: The slope can be defined as the ______________________________________ of a line in the
coordinate plane. We use the following symbols for slope:
Slope  m 
rise
vertical change
change in y


run horizontal change change in x
3) The relationship between Celsius (0C) and Fahrenheit (0F) is linear. Find the average rate of change that
relates 0C to 0F given the following table:
Celsius (0C)
Fahrenheit (0F)
00
320
1000
2120
Determining Slope Given Two Points:
There are four types of slope:
Positive Slope
Negative Slope
No slope/Undefined Slope
Zero Slope
Use the graph to determine the average rate of change of each line below.
4)
Determine the average rate of change of the line passing through each pair of points.
5) (-5, 3) and (2, 1)
6) (4, 3) and (1, -1)
7) (-3, -9) and (-4, -12)
