Lesson Plan for Geometry Instructor’s Name: Brooke Odle (Fellow) Teacher’s Name: Maria Sanchez Course Title: Mathematics (Geometry) Unit: 3-5 Topic: Complementary and Supplementary Angles Grade Level: 10 Rationale: The lecture will cover Complementary and Supplementary Angles (Section 3-5) by reviewing the definition of complementary and supplementary angles. Definitions and concepts will be reinforced via youtube video clips and a matching game where students must find the complement or supplement for a given angle. Instructional Goal(s): The students will learn how to identify and use complementary and supplementary angles. Performance Objective: Students will play a matching game where their ability to identify complementary and supplementary angles will be assessed. Students will also be able to indentify complementary and supplementary angle pairs in more complex examples. Lesson Content: Students will: Learn the definition of complementary and supplementary angles Be able to identify complementary and supplementary angles Time frame for the Lesson: Time Frame of Activity 30 mins 10 mins Activity to be performed Give lesson on complementary and supplementary angles via prezi (includes youtube video clips and a matching game) Ms. Sanchez will close the lesson by going over a more complex example problem with the students Note: All times are approximate, and should be revised based upon student progress) Instructional procedures: a. Focusing event –Students will be asked to recall what they know about complementary and supplementary angles. b. Bridge/ Connections – Students will learn how to relate complementary and supplementary angles to construction (complementary angles form corners and supplementary angles form straight lines) c. Teaching procedures – Students will be asked to recall what they know about complementary and supplementary angles. The definitions will be featured in the prezi for the students to copy in their notes. The definitions will be reinforced via a youtube video clip and an online game where students must match a given angle with its d. e. f. g. complement or supplement. Students will be asked to identify ways to remember the difference between complementary and supplementary angles. After surveying student responses, the students will watch another youtube clip that provides three different methods for remembering the difference between complementary and supplementary angles. Formative check – Students will be asked questions collectively, but instructor will call on students individually when playing the matching game to reinforce student ability to identify complementary and supplementary angles. Instructor will ask students for their method of remembering the difference between complementary and supplementary angles. Student participation- Students will be asked questions collectively and will be called on individually to identify complementary and supplementary angle pairs. Interdisciplinary connections – The lesson features a youtube video clip that integrates complementary and supplementary angles with construction. Closure- The lesson will end with the students progressing to more complex example problems with their teacher. The prezi will be posted online for the students to review, but the posted prezi will contain additional web resources on how to use a protactor, a link to a brief review on angles, a link to a more detailed review on angles, and a link to a concentration game involving complementary and supplementary angles. Evaluation Procedure: Student evaluations will initially occur with the matching game. The lesson will also end with the students identifing complementary and supplementary angles in more complex problems, where the teacher and instructor will be better able to assess whether or not they have grasped the concepts. Materials and Aids: The lesson will require a laptop with sound and internet access (prezi, matching game, youtube clips).
