As we learn about the Dynasties of Ancient China, you will create a graphic novel/comic book to
demonstrate your knowledge of the Dynasties. Your graphic novel should include:
1. A creative, relevant cover page. (10 points)
2. A six strip comic for each dynasty which includes captions, illustrations, and speech bubbles. (40 points)
3. A summary/description of each dynasty in a minimum of five sentences. (40 points)
4. A culminating activity comparing the governments of Ancient China and Ancient Egypt (Venn Diagram on
last page). (10 points)
You will not be graded on your artistic ability, but on your ability to creatively discuss the dynasties
through a comic strip.
Your completed graphic novel will count as a formal assessment and an IB assessment for third quarter.

Helpful guidelines for comic strips:
- Captions are not essential to every comic strip, but in this case you need to ensure you are
getting information about each dynasty across, so captions might be helpful if you don’t feel
your illustrations are very informative.
- Illustrations are essential because they illustrate what the character is doing, thinking, and
feeling. Without illustrations, there would not be a comic strip.
- Comics are able to tell a story in a short and creative way, allowing the reader to use his/her
own imagination to fill in the “gaps.”
- Speech bubbles allow the characters in the comic to have a “voice” in the storyline. There is no
need to overuse these, because comics are supposed to be mainly pictures. However, if you do
not have enough speech bubbles then the readers will not know what your characters are
thinking.
