UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK ISS21 Fellowship (PhD) TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. The ISS21 PhD Fellowship will be awarded in the form of a fee waiver, tenable for a maximum of three years from the date of initial registration, and a bursary of up to €3,900 per annum. 2. The fellowship will be awarded to a candidate who wishes to carry out social science research in any of the following areas migration; childhood/youth and young people’s lives in socio-spatial context; gender, work and equality; gendered identities; rural social change; transnational im/mobilities - for the degree of PhD (or PhD Track or MPhil as a pathway to a PhD) in Applied Social Studies at University College Cork. Research in any of these areas that engages with questions of social inclusion/exclusion, belongings or identities are particularly welcome. Other related areas could also be considered. 3. Applicants must have at least Second Class Honours (Grade 1) or equivalent in their first or subsequent degree in a relevant social sciences discipline. 4. Applications are invited from students who will commence a PhD (or PhD Track, or MPhil as a pathway to a PhD) programme in September 2014. Applicants should also apply through www.pac.ie for the relevant programme. The award of the scholarship(s) is contingent on the student being accepted to the relevant PhD (or PhD Track or MPhil) programme. 5. Applicants should complete the PhD Fellowship application form. They should include relevant supporting materials and non-returnable transcripts of their academic record. Graduates of University College Cork do not need to supply transcripts. A reference must be supplied separately, on the appropriate form. Applications and references must be submitted both electronically and in hard copy. 6. Incomplete applications or applications received after the closing date will not be considered. Applications must adhere to the stipulated word limits. 7. Selection of successful applicants on the basis of the materials supplied will be by a panel of academics from the School of Applied Social Studies and ISS21. The fellowship will be awarded to a candidate of sufficient merit who has a feasible research topic of academic value in the area of interest. 8. Should a successful applicant also be the recipient of any other scholarship or grant of a like magnitude which covers fees, s/he will be required to forego the award of the ISS21 Fellowship. The Fellowship holder will be subject to an annual review of progress by the School of Applied Social Studies Graduate Studies Committee. If the progress reports are deemed unsatisfactory, the scholarship will be terminated. 10. The School of Applied Social Studies and ISS21 should be notified in good time of any medical or personal problems likely to cause disruption to the fellowship holder’s research schedule. 11. If a teaching/tutoring opportunity in an area reasonably compatible with the Fellowship recipient’s expertise becomes available, the recipient is permitted to undertake such work up to a maximum of four hours per week only, as agreed by the recipient’s supervisors/mentors at UCC. 12.
