The new MA ins Sustainable Leisure Management (MA SLM) will prepare emerging leaders to examine and create innovative solutions ensuring that residents and travelers alike can enjoy recreational experiences, natural and cultural amenities, heritage resources and adventure as part of their life experience on a sustainable basis. It is intended that students be instructed by VIU faculty as well as international scholars and recognized leaders in sustainable development.
The Visiting Scholars program is designed to allow global leaders in sustainability and innovation in leisure to take an active role in the delivery of the MA SLM courses, participate on students’ supervisory committees, and contribute to on-going public discourse on sustainability and innovation through the VIU World Leisure
Centre of Excellence (WLCE). Interested scholars are encouraged to submit applications to the VIU WLCE
Visiting Scholars Committee.
The Visiting Scholar Program
The MA SLM uses a cohort model and is delivered through a series of consecutive learning modules with short breaks between each course for proposal writing and fieldwork. A primary function of the Visiting
Scholars program is to have local and international leaders in the study and practice of sustainability and innovation in leisure, directly involved in the delivery of course material. To this end, VIU has some resources to help cover travel and accommodation expenses of those involved in the program. The extent and nature of the actual experience is a negotiated experience between the Scholar and the VIU WLCE Visiting Scholars
Committee. The number of Visiting Scholars is dependent upon resources and travel requirements; however, there will be a minimum of four per year.
Expectations
Visiting Scholars will be expected (but not limited) to:
Participate in the delivery of one of the courses in the MA SLM,
Deliver a public lecture focusing on sustainability and innovation in leisure.
To Apply
The VIU WLCE Visiting Scholars Committee is seeking applications from scholars with research expertise in (but not limited to) sustainability, innovation, behaviour change, influencing change, community development, knowledge mobilization, collaboration, and strategic planning. Scholars can be either (or both) practitioners or academics who are actively engaged in the study or application of sustainable practices in leisure management.
Applications are accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis; however, scholars interested in joining the program for the 2011 – 2012 and 2012 – 2013 academic years are encouraged to apply by March 15, 2011.
Applicants are requested to submit the application form and the following to Joanne Schroeder
